Piercings
« on: December 24, 2010, 03:12:29 pm »

It being Chrimbus, the holiday of receiving, I'm thinking about getting myself a present.  Specifically an eyebrow piercing or maybe an anti-eyebrow.

Considerations:
- There are highly recommended piercing shops nearby.
- I've never gotten any piercings (or tattoos) before.
- It shouldn't matter at my current workplace and I don't anticipate seeking a new job for at least a year.
- I have thick, prominent eyebrows (photo).  It might be unwise draw more attention to them, but I'm not that worried about it.

So, I'm looking for advice regarding piercings in general, the eyebrow/anti-eyebrow piercings, those piercings vis-a-vis my face, and what kind of jewelry to put in them.  Also, feel free to derail this thread to talk about Tim and Eric.

No offence, but I think you'll look very camp.

I suggest getting a tattoo of a dwarf on your shoulder or something, instead.

That's manly.

Generally speaking, I advise against voluntarily putting holes in your head, however small.

Is that in regard to men getting any piercing, men getting eyebrow piercings, or me in particular getting one?

I'm straight, and I know that unconventional piercings will make some mainstream-oriented people think I'm gay, but I'm not that concerned about it.

That's why you have to put the jewelry in immediately, to keep the brains from leaking out.

 Bushy eyebrows bros. Yo.

I say go for it if you have no major objections from any source. Or at least have the sense to not wear it around parents and family and have parents understanding enough to let you wear something like that on your own time with your own friends.

Unfortunately, you can't take it out until the piercing's healed, which apparently takes several months.  And even then, the piercing will close up if you take it out for more than a few hours.  And my parents won't be crazy about it.  Fortunately, it doesn't matter since I'm legally/financially independent and don't see them that often.

Just remember that there is some weird discriminatory attitude from a portion of individuals about those who get "wrong" piercings, and that the Triangle is still in the South, if not all that deep.

It being Chrimbus, the holiday of receiving,

Have you ever read the Tim & Eric board on the Adult Swim website? It's so depressing. It's as if half the people who like the show on those boards don't understand it, like people bitching that the Chrimbus Special was too commercial (seriously).

Anyway, the thing about piercings as opposed to tattoos is that, if you feel the need later, you can actually take them out. In that regard, go nuts, as long as it's not something that'll leave some irreparable hole in your body or have a wacky-high chance of piercing your optic nerve (do not ask me how one would manage to do this).

You in particular getting an eyebrow piercing in either of those positions.

You could possibly pull off a lip piercing, but I just can't see it with your eyebrows.

Yeah, I'll have to keep that in mind.  Carrboro is about as non-Southern as the South gets, but I'm frequently in other parts of the Triangle.

Haha, no.  Judging by your description, I'm glad I stayed away.  I always figured there must be a bunch of T&E fans who just enjoy the show on an absurdist level.

Hmm.  Yeah, I thought about a lip piercing, but the idea just makes me wince, and apparently they can contribute to receding gumlines, which I already have to some degree.  Maybe I'll put some kind of mockup piercing on my eyebrow for a couple days to decide whether it's aesthetically viable.

Some sketches/segments seem a lot more accessible than others. For instance, people seem to like Dr. Steve Brule even if they don't "get" the show as a whole. I think Tim and/or Eric put it best when he/they said their show is basically the "nightmare version of television".

I wouldn't be concerned about it at all.  I, nor anyone I have ever met, thought that certain types of piercings meant "gay."  Well, I guess that's not quite true, when I was 10, me and my friends heard that if just the left ear was pierced, that meant the guy was gay.  Of course, I was 10 at the time...

That said, I've never heard that eyebrow piercings meant gay.

(Interestingly enough, I also live in the Triangle -- Apex, to be more precise)

Funny, I heard the same thing a few years ago.

I have to admit Foot, I never figured you for a piercings kind of guy, especially not lips or eyebrows.  Not in a "symbol" bullshit way, but just not a piercing thing.

That said, the great thing about piercings is, if you don't like it, just stop wearing anything and it goes away of its own accord.  So it's got that massive advantage over tattoos.

I almost got talked into getting my eyebrow pierced, because I do an awesome one-brow-raised expression, which glinting metal could only improve.  Works fine with prominent eyebrows too I guess.  But those "anti-eyebrow" things look fucking ridiculous, I don't know why, just don't.

Yeah, anti-eyebrow is fugly. And I don't think eybrow piercing would work with your eyebrows. If you're really dead set on getting a non-ear piercing, get one on your lip or your nose.
