Magma Trap Innovation
« on: December 14, 2010, 06:19:37 pm »

We all know how to simply fill a large room with magma, pull a lever and kill hordes of goblins and carvans of elves hordes of elves and carvans of goblins, but that's so boring. I want to see the craziest, most original, and most effective magma trap designs.

Sorry, I don't have a screen shot, but I think we have all build the magma flood trap that then solidifies the user in obsidian. I found this to be more easy to clean out then the normal kind.

Someone adjusted the "mist generator" to use magma and used it to give unwanted visitors magma showers.

Each hatch is linked to the plates around it, and the pump is always on.

So, magma flows over the plates, triggering them, making the hatches open, causing the lava to fall down to where the enemies are?

No, enemies hit the plates, opening the hatches and causing pressurized lava to spill forth.

So, the bottom picture is beneath the top picture?

It does when you pump it, though it may change between saves (not sure).

My next fortress will use a lot more magma! That mist looks interesting...

There was one someone did a while ago that dropped magma in each of many tiles in thier entrance path.  Then another pump would immediately grab the magma and drop it at another spot.  Because the magma was constantly cycling there was always a path through.  Invaders would blithely walk into the streams of magma and be instantly incinerated.  Then the system could be shut off allowing all the metal and bone items to be retrieved.  He put a movie of it in action up on the DFMA here.

I've never built one quite like that! That poor, sacrificial lever puller. Although that does sound like a useful way of getting rid of nobles, and might result in cool statues depicting self-sacrifice in the name of the fort...

I think if that happened I would put the resulting statuary in the 'school' burrow for children with all the artifacts and monster skeletons behind glass windows. 'This is your king, who died to protect you and because he liked adamantine too much.'

hmm... I wonder if I can find my save from 40d; I had a 40x3 corridor with iron grate flooring; a set of pumps pushed magma up through the grating, flooding the corridor in what could be best described as a wave of magma bearing down on any invaders unfortunate to be trapped between the bridges that sealed the two ends.

I could probably recreate it in the current version of the game, though.

I used 384 pumps, 4 on each of 94 levels, and 4000+ power to make a volcano in the middle of the map erupt. The map floods in no time at all.

+1 best design

I like how you chose to design the volcano pump. Every time the Dark Fortress throws a party, you whip out the hand mixer to froth a rich, red velvet mousse on top of a plate of goblin cookies.

Delicious, poignant, 100% of your daily value of iron.
