I think the level of pain depends more on how much force is applied thereto and less on the balls themselves (unless it's a shot put).

Depends on which side of the rugby ball that hits you, and whether the football is wet and covered in sand or not. In terms of pain, the Wet and Sandy Football of Destruction is up there with Lego landmines. :v

I'd say a rugby ball would be more painful. They seem to be made of a tougher material, and are vaguely torpedo shaped.

And if it is being thrown correctly, it will have a spin on it too. And, again if thrown correctly, the spinning pointy end will hit first.

I use cheap disposables myself, and they're not bad as long as you get the ones that are about two steps from the bottom - blue-handled two-blade. You can pay extra for the BiC brand, but that's not really necessary. Just never buy white-handled ones, those are shit.

In Australia I usually just buy the very cheapest ones available, and don't really have a problem.
Sure they're not great, but my face doesn't end up looking like... um... something funny with holes in it that bleed a lot.
