Then you realise that great decided to be a party pooper and point out that eskimoes, inuit, whatever you want to call them (because they can get offended depending on their tribes and such) almost exclusively use(d) animal skins and bones for their shelters.

yea what movie was that that depicted them using igloos and such?

Something in the 20s or 30s I think, the entire thing was just pulled out of the ass of the director. The tribe involved was messing with his head on several occasions.

Eskimo is also racist. I find it hilarious that many don't know that.

Depends on where you are- it's definitely racist in Canada, but I have family who are Alaskan Iñupiat, where it's really not considered that bad at all. And "Eskimo" in anthropology and linguistics is a cover term for the Inuit and Yup'ik as opposed to the Aleut.

Racism is in the meaning, not the word, anyway. I've yet to hear someone say Eskimo with racist intent. An inaccurate descriptive term isn't necessarily an instant racist term.

you mean like how the N word isn't racist if it just means a certain type of person and "white people can totally be n-s too!"

No, words can very much be racist, and the only people who get to decide if a word is offensive are the people they are referring to.

Well, I speak spanish, and the word most commonly used to call the inuits is "esquimal", wich translates to eskimo.

Nigger was the socially accepted way of referring to black people. That's what most people see it as, another way of saying black. As such, common opinion would be that a white person can't be called a nigger. It's not a state of mind, it's a physical attribute that you either possess or lack.

Whilst I agree that if a person states they find a word offensive, it shouldn't be used, there are no inherently racist terms. If a person says something perceived as racist, or in other words something which may be construed as you putting your race above that of another's, then it's not racist if you did not mean to make any comment on superiority. It was just insensitive.

More like how black people can use it and no one thinks of it as racistic term, but if white people, say, someone who has grown in mainly black populated neighbourhood, uses it despite using it on exactly same meaning, it somehow becomes racistic?
I know for a fact that there are lot of black folk, both in and out of USA, who don't take offence because none is intended, just like I don't mind being called "snowflake" or some other term that could be considered racistic in some other context.

TL;DR: Intent and context deside if usage of words are racistic, not if someone is offended by them. Because no matter what you say there will allways be someone who finds it "offensive".

Racistic isn't a word, and most thoughts about the etymology of Eskimo have it related to snow-shoes, not "raw meat eater" (though that is possible)

So you are actually arguing that the N word is totally okay because there's always going to be offended by something?

What is up with some white people and this competitive need to use the n word? You can use it when you deal with all the oppression and suffering that comes along with it, and even then only if the people you are referring to are okay with it.

Fairly certain no one even implied they wanted to say nigger, just that whether it's racist seems to depend, ironically, on your race.

And words are exceedingly relative. If you think a word is appropriate, then you may use it, and if it turns out it's not then you learn from that.

I, personally, would find rules imposed on me by others over my speech to be a tad annoying if no one was offended, but it was a supposedly "Racist term" and therefore offlimits for all eternity.

That is not at all ironic. When a word is used to hurt and oppress your race, and you decide to use that word yourself, while I would argue that it still has racial connotations and no one should use it, an argument could also be made that that is the decision of the oppressed party, and being white, it's not really my place to make the judgement call on that. Or any person that is not of that race.

I don't think the N word needs quotations when referred to as a racist term. It is very much that, and that shouldn't be under debate.

edit: wow you actually just typed it too, I overlooked that, I assumed no one here would actually feel okay doing that.. wow.

Yes, because saying "I can't talk about this because I'm white, only black people may speak of this and make decisions on its use..." isn't at all racist in and of itself.

There are so many things to be, and so many things thereof that are offensive. Let's not tiptoe about folks, it's demeaning and only makes the matter more pronounced and long lasting.
