You got to damage it's lungs to sophacate something, strangleing just knocks them out, try attacking it's upper body, it might just damage it's lungs if you have enough skill.

I just kicked it's skull in...

I eagerly await the day I can sneak up on someone and snap their neck...

Is there a way to get a house/place to own/stay? Maybe like a lair with a locked door and a chest? Should/could I use a lair of a night creature I killed? Thanks/sorry about all the slashes.

Night creature lairs remember positions of objects you leave there. Because of this, they are the best option for a hidey-hole.
Bogeymen will vanish once you enter the door of the lair, too.

Only drawback - inside you will not be able to tell when the sun rises for morning.

Actually, you sometimes can.  It seems to have to do with whether the door to the lair is deep in a tunnel into the side of the hill or if it's right at the entrance.  Also, you can always see the sky if you're standing on the square under the trapdoor, for lairs that have them.

Yes, but that may or may not keep away bogeymen. I find they only reliably stay away when you are a step inside.

EDIT: and that is a small quibble with a wonderful hideyhole.

My adventures have slept on the entrance tile to a lair plenty of times without any bogeymen attacking.

Throwing anything that isn't way smaller than you does practically nothing.

Am I correct in assuming we can't do anything with cages besides using them for storage?

Is there any way to make my dwarf more adept at falling?
I jumped 2 Z-levels, and decimated my entire left side.

Actually, I think that toughness and willpower are the most important stats.  You're almost guaranteed to get hurt with a drop of more than 1 level, so toughness helps minimize the damage and willpower helps you stop from passing out.

God knows how long it took me to figure that out.

I used to take all my points out of everything and put them in Strength, Agility, Toughness, and Endurance.  Exclusively.

Thus, I'd be godly, until something actually managed to hit me... Then I'd promptly pass out from a minor bruise and be beaten/eaten/gored/raped to death.
