I just had a dwar-piphany...!
« on: November 20, 2010, 12:50:50 am »

...I don't have to have every industry represented in my fortress. I don't even have to make any crafts, ever.
If I want, I can have only metalsmiths and plant gatherers to support them. I feel so...free...? I feel like a new mandwarf!

Have you ever had a flash of stunning inspiration like this, when the shades of monotony are drawn back and for a precious moment everything lies clear before you?

No that's the one drawback of omniscience.

IN THEORY you only need to seal yourself away with a farming industry. No metal, no cooking, just growing and brewing, with fifteen foot think walls to keep intruders out, but that is hardly fun.

I love setting up supply chains!

Yeah, it is very boring. It's even worse on islands, there aren't even siegers outside doing nothing, it's just you and a big empty map.

Islands can still be fun with the right mod. Kobald cave with a evil biome island is always entertaining!

I was never under the impression you needed every industry in the first place. As far as i can remember, i have not made a single bar of Soap, i've hardly made any glass, and i've only put a Kitchen to use like maybe 3 times. I don't even start making Metal stuff till it hits me, "Hey, i might need some Steel armor and weapons, otherwise i'll get killed to death by anything that somehow makes it through my traps".

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.

Well, I was thinking that in true dwarf fashion I don't need to bother with anything except setting up an awesome metal industry. A token dwarf here and there doing engraving and such. The way I've always done it is focused on stone crafts, which is ok I guess, but metal is so much cooler

I had the same thought when I "discovered" that metal crafts are much, much more valuable than stone crafts.

Soap is only useful if your primary defense is melee dwarves. Glass I've used so I can extract to vials, but I can see why people would use it. With a magma smelter, the only resource used ever is time. Metal... is self-explanatory. I have that same problem.

Kitchens are really easy and useful. Prepared food makes dwarves happier and it's worth more. Very easy to make, as well. In other industries, there are multiple steps, but kitchens are just get food and prepare it.

All you need are legendary masons. For mega projects. If you have magma never have too many woodcutters, to will deforest the map for no reason.

Deforestation is a lot faster if you aren't in a flat area with lots of trees.

I've never really made crafts much, and even when I did I stopped making anything solely used for trading when goblins started leaving their clothes all over the place.

I'm kind of a megaprojects guy, so mostly whenever I get a dwarf without any skills that keep the my dwarves from starving or bleeding (or if he does but I have enough already) I just hand him a shovel and/or pile of rocks and direct him to the giant-ass tower.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

My dwar-piphany: lavish roasts made by a decent cook sell for a LOT of money.  I can buy out a caravan with 10~ roasts!

One time, I tried to set up an economy based off of stone toys.

As you can imagine, that failed horribly.
