Did I just "Nerf" my embark?
« on: November 17, 2010, 03:44:26 pm »

OK so recently I went out with the intention of getting a "fun" embark, I picked a Terrifying embark site at the base of an immense mountain range. However... I wanted to extend the embark site into a woodland close by for extra wood.  The woodland was rated "Untamed wilds"
Well upon embarking I was greeted with a giant eagle, and some slugmen.  No monsters or zombies or skeletons or anything! By extending the embark location into another "biome" did I nerf my area? Is the mountain, which still shows up as deep Purple on my map, now no longer haunted or terrifying??

Dual-biome embarks just don't seem to work.

I have had the same issue with embarks that cross terrifying with another surrounding type, usually my Dwarves meet such terrifying creatures such as slugmen and snailmen, perhaps a few flocks of skeletal Buzzards showing up from time to time.

Not much of a comparison to the haunted embark I did the other day where zombie horses chased my dwarves around then a "named" sketetal horse came along and finished the job.   :o

From what I've seen, evil regions have either undead or monsters. Not both.

Since the only evil creature native to mountains (dark gnomes) can only be found in Sinister places, evil mountains will either get undead or no evil things at all. Judging by your perfectly normal giant eagle, you got the latter.

Because of this, evil mountains can be a crapshoot if you're looking for fun. Next time try an evil swamp, forest, or desert.

Dual-biome embarks just don't seem to work.

They do work. Or at least they work at least some of the time, since last time my embark was half-evil I got evil critters just fine.

I didn't stay around long enough to check, but I just tried again in a half-normal-desert and half-haunted-plains. Got regular camels from the desert and zombie horses from the plains.

The topic creator also had creatures from multiple biomes.

Yeah, Giant eagles, slugmen and Goats are what I seem ot get the most of right now.
Of course I was hoping for wolves, skeletons and zombies. But alas.

I had a dual good-evil biome once. I had zombies and unicorns but not zombie unicorns.

Im bottled up behind my walls just now, have werewolves and unicorns dual-teaming everyone who sets foot outside :(

Mixing the biomes up does work as has been stated, its just never perfectly predictable what critters you will actually get.

Embarking half on an untamed wilds forest and half terrifying mountain i saw nothing at all from the mountains for 3 years, then 2 zombie giant eagles inside a month

With that location I get Hoary Marmots, Buzzards, Mountain Goats, and Dark Gnomes.  Maybe I'll get some ghosts later on to spice things up.

One of my forts is on both a terrifying ocean and serene swamp. From the ocean I've gotten zombie conchmen and zombie lesser kraken. The caverns are filled with skeletal kruelers and skeletal giant olms. From the swamp, I'm getting peaceful little slugmen and snailmen.

Dual biomes seem to work fine for me.

Dual biomes DO work. I had a desert/forest biome. The desert had camels and the forest had elk and horses. Meat was varied and plentiful...

Dual biomes do indeed work, and probably even tri biomes. It's just sometimes they're iffy. Seems sometimes one biome just 'overpowers' the rest.

Plus there's the fact that "Evil" biomes are a hit or miss sometimes. Some give you tons of FUN! Others give you things like naked mole rats. Whoopie.
