I dont mean overmatch thin, just thin. HEAT is better here because it autobounces at 85 degrees instead of 70. I'm sure we've all bounced off a batchat because it was angled too much - similarly, losing a 150mm shell because some medium's side armor was at 70 degrees or you hit the far side of a Panther's turret is something that can happen if you load AP.

Additionally, many of the big overmatch targets have armor below 85 degrees anyway, so you can pen things like the 140's turret top even though your shells can't actually overmatch. There are still some overmatch opportunities that you can't take advantage of, of course, but they aren't all that common.

The thing with HEAT is that it baunces less but gets no normalization so while in theory it should be able to pen a IS-7 from the front by aiming at the "weak" spots. It can't despit of the well over 300 mm of penetration.
A Jagd E100 on the other hand with 290 has a good chance of penning if it hits the tip of the pike or "lights" on the hull even when it points straight at you.

Yes, but even with 0 normalization the lower plate is still only 260mm. It does get unpennable if you get too close, though.

Also, never shoot the lights! Those are 340mm. Always shoot the tip of the pike above the weld =)

Or if the IS-7 is stupid and angles (as they usually do) just shoot one of the pike sides.

Generally though, the E-100 doesn't need HEAT for the most part, you'll usually be at ranges where aiming at weakspots is entirely possible so the 235mm's is pretty ok for that task, especially against tanks which are lower than you, just shoot the commanders hatch.

HEAT should be used only when there isn't any other option, like a facehugging Jageru or a Maus or something that is just raw armour without much hope for a weakspot.

HEAT pretty much quadruples the amount of leeway for where your shell can land against most tanks. Just because its possible to hit weakspots doesn't mean you can in your situation or should. What might take you three seconds to aim at for a 70% chance of penning will take a HEAT-100 one second for 90%. Not worth spending the extra time just to make some more credits.

E-100 really does need HEAT. Even tame things like the Obj 140's frontal hull armor can bounce 235mm. Plus with the E-100 you want to be aiming for the least amount of time you can to keep that turret angled, at least against other high pen tanks.

Odd i think i read some discussion where people said the lights mark the less angled parts.

Or if the IS-7 is stupid and angles (as they usually do) just shoot one of the pike sides.

Oddly enough i had at least 2 situations where i'm on a hill with a IS-7 unangling his armor for me and my shots failing to pen anyway.

One where i was in a Tiger 2 in El Hallus and another in a ST-I on Mountain pass. In both situations i had both an elevated position and stupid/distracted IS-7 as a target.
No pens.

Nowdays i'm actively avoiding this thing because aside of the LFP i just can't find anything to shoot at. Not to mention its side armor is trollish and magically angled.

Old wives tail, unfortunately. I used to think the same thing. Luckily these days we have tools to actually test this stuff.

TBH i don't trust Tank Inspector completely. For example according to it the lower glacis on IS-7 is worth around 240-260 mm of armor... but at the same time i relatively reliably pen it with the KT and Lowe top gun(s).

If an IS7 is angling so much that shooting his UFP seems like an option just go for his side instead. Just shoot below the spaced armor, right into the tracks, where he only has 100+20 mm armor not sloped at all.

Tank Inspector works by taking the actual armor models and data from the game itself, so it's never wrong in that respect. What you're seeing is how it forms its effective armor calculations as if the shot came from the center of the camera. If you dont position the camera right, you wont get realistic armor values.

In this case, if we pull the camera back to a more realistic position, the IS-7's LFP is between 215mm and 230mm. That explains why the KT and especially Lowe can pen the IS-7's LFP in midrange combat.

I play on EU. T-34-85 is my favorite tank and the Type 58 was a huge let down. The combination of lacking pen, depression(1 degree less) and accuracy really kills it. Somehow I still managed to get 1000 dmg/game.

I think I'll continue to the T-34-1 next. Currently the only tier X tanks I'm interested in are Leopard(currently at Leo PTA), Patton(Pershing opened) and 121. I have 140, 61A and E50M so I'm a bit of a medium specialist I guess.  :)

T-34-1 is a good tank, I'm sure you'll like it.

I went for the light line myself. Mostly because they give you better guns and in the end you can save up some XP on the WZ-120 if you unlock one of the 100mm's on the WZ-132.
