My favorite little thing is how a cat or kitten brings the remains of vermin to their owner and leave it for them (partially because I'm a cat owner in real life).  I remember I once had a sick dwarf (well, he had lost his leg, really) and I was checking up on him, to see if he was going to get a crutch or something, and I noticed the little 2s all around his bed, where the little cat that had adopted him was bringing him vermin remains that the dwarves would just pick up and bring to the stockpile.  I thought it was absolutely adorable.

Watching fish runs through a stream.  I love watching them swim around.

That's the spirit you two!

When caravans arrive and hauling trade goods time comes. If I'm not in the middle of a huge stone-dumping project, I usually have a few idlers, or even more than that, and they all descend upon the stockpile like a swarm of bees. It actually looks funny.

Set [SPEED:0] for your dorfs and have 50 idlers.... then designate a massive hauling/dumping project.

Remembering back on a previous fort when all my cats drove away an elven siege with no cats lost. In fact, not a single cat died of anything but age until the fort crumbled. Crumbling was caused by too many popular dwarves 'randomly' throwing themselves into magma.

I only just started playing Dwarf Fortress the other day, and I'm already hopelessly addicted. :P
I started off just playing adventure mode, as the main game seemed too daunting to me...
But just yesterday I started my first proper fortress. Of course, at first I had no idea what I was doing, and it was a long process getting my dwarves to do anything at all.
Well, by the time I'd dug out some caves and figured out (partly) how to build things, a lot of my dwarves, and new migrants, were pretty frustrated. Eventually a couple of them lost it, and killed some of my other dwarves...
My first reaction was to command my soldiers to kill them, but I couldn't. (I have no idea how to mark them an enemy or anything like that :( )
So then I discovered the JUSTICE screen. I looked through all my dwarves for a candidate for a sheriff, eventually I decided on a recruit in one of my squads, a new migrant. He had no friends, so I figured he would make a good dealer-of-justice, having no ties to anyone. I made him Sheriff, gave him the title of executioner and a massive axe, as well as a trendy black outfit!

...Bad move.
I think he was a bit unhinged to begin with, but giving him an important job made him go completely nuts...
He was pretty handy with that axe, and killed about... 30%? Of my dwarves.
Of course that didn't include the two criminals. *sigh*
After that, he was okay for a while, dishing out justice, and only occasionally going nuts and lopping off some heads. Eventually, though, I think I only had about seven dwarfs left, and he was posessed. I have no idea what by, but he just sat there in a 'strange mood', not moving.
He sat there for ages, until eventually he went 'completely insane', became a clothier, and got brutally beaten to death by another dwarf.

I guess I did something wrong in choosing that guy... But damn, that was fun. :D I'm really addicted after that!

Welcome to DF.  I recommend you use the wiki.  You have a lot of learning to do and you have a brutal gauntlet of grueling Fun before you as you begin your vertical climb across a spiked cliff difficulty curve.  But it is worth it when you get the hang of it [and learn to cheat a little].  Get Dwarf Therapist from the utilities section.

Finding a dwarf who I can relate to in some way, whether by their likes, personality, relationships, or particular experiences.

Reading the descriptions of my favourite dwarves.
Sometimes its really fascinating
Sometimes its REALLY, REALLY SAD.

Forgotten Beasts seem to be akin to Toady playing Russian Roulette with your fortress, as they can be anything from harmless giant worms made of mud to necrotic-gas spewing nigh-invunerable iron hydras of doom.

Arriving at a new embark and discovering that the entire ocean shore I embarked on is composed of obsidian from a volcano an embark away. Considering that every soil type I have has an aquifer, I'm glad it is so.

I had a fortress where the kitten would bring toad remains to my herbalist (who lived on the bottom of a tower that was suspended in air, 100 z-levels off the valley floor). Every time the herbalist wasn't doing anything, the cat would come trotting in, drop toad remains next to his bed and wander off.

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

When everything is fine in my fort and everyone is just going about their lives (and my orders).

Also, a nooby question for They Got Leader: how do you build stuff so high up? I mean, as far as I know there're z-level caps and so on... although I never tried to reach them. So, how do you remove it?

The most I know is you can change world-gen parameters to give you up to 100 z levels, or in my current embark I have 101 above ground z levels.  Any secret to get more then that is welcomed.

For me its the swarm of fireflies flitting around a section of the multi-zlevel wall I'm building.

Just embarked to a swarm of bumblebees (my first!), very cool.  Then the kitten methodically killed it's way through the entire swarm.

Edit: yeah, the original text should go to another thread. Moved it to 'What's going on in your fort?'

The new text:
Breaching a cavern. Period.

Setting a cat to be butchered.
Honestly there are suddenly so many of them that they don't get eaten quick enough.
Lucky you can eat em.
