Almost entirely anime, correct.  Rare.  True traps are not exactly welcome in a lot of circles, because the idea of trapping is playing into the ideas of those who don't accept us.

Edit: "Those who don't accept us" kill us.  But you know that.  I try not to know that, sometimes.

"Traps" are typically anime characters who are cis males, but present in a feminine way. The idea there, at least from what I've seen online, is that you post pictures of these characters to unsuspecting people (for "best" results: straight (cis) men), and they say "that's hot". Then you come in and say "that's a boy". And they react to that, usually with utter confusion and possibly hostility.

The implications of such a thing should be obvious by now. I consider this practice all sorts of awful. I have no problem with the anime characters themselves, but the practice of trolling others with "traps" is a dubious practice at best.

Trap isn't an anime term. It was adopted by anime fans. It was an ancient image macro of Admiral Akbar that used to be posted in reaction to people posting crossdresser porn, mostly in imageboards, as a kind of shock video to lure people in and then freak them out with sudden (usually freakishly massive) penis. The 'trap' wasn't the participant, it's that you were being lured into watching freaky gay porn. I.E, lured into a 'trap'.

Over time, this came to be used to refer to the participants of the videos in question. But the intent is still the same, what makes something a 'trap' is that it's used to turn people on and then turn them off and shock them. Some people misuse the term to mean anyone who looks even slightly androgynous, but some people also think that literally and figuratively are interchangeable terms.

I wonder where that "::foo::" notation came from. It feels like some amalgamation of C++'s double colon operator and an escape sequence. Then again, I've never seen anyone write "std::vomit::" or similar.

I always thought it was because you don't really use colons that way in day to day conversation. this *is* often used for emphasis, for example, but this :is: not.
