Sat down to watch a movie with my mom on Mother's Day.
Went to HBO, which we pay for, and went to their free movie list.
Found "Pitch Black." Ok, decent movie.
Immediately I notice something is off. I get a message that "you may not be able to use fast forward functionality with this movie."
Huh, ok, that's weird. All streamed movies on HBO let you do that.
Then the movie starts and another oddity shows itself. The USA Network logo pops up front and center. That's.....weird. Why would HBO be showing a version of the movie licensed from USA Networks, a garden variety cable station.
The movie starts and within 2 minutes, I realize the reason it's got the USA logo. It IS the TV edit, complete with all the swearing muted out of it.
And then the final insult....7 minutes in to the movie it starts showing me fucking commercials.
So with Coronavirus and the fact that probably 3/4 of the world is now relying on streaming for their entertainment 24/7, HBO has obviously done something to their movie licensing deals. Rather than licensing a theatrical release copy to show on HBO, they're now licensing the GARBAGE cable TV edits of these movies AND running fucking commercials on them, either for their benefit or as part of their agreement with whoever they licensed these movies from.
Like.....what's the goddamn point of paying for HBO to watch movies if you're going to get the exact same experience as watching it on cable TV? Oh, so you can watch a 15 year old movie any time you want?
Pretty much bullshit. If my roommate didn't insist we have HBO as part of our cable package, I'd fucking boot that shit to the curb tomorrow.
What's worse is, this is probably the new norm from now on. Once a precedent has been set that is more profitable than the previous standard, they'll never go back.
