IIRC, combining Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen can cause some serious side effects in some people. That seems like a sensible reason to make a combination drug prescription-only.

Yea, prescription only I can see... But sched. II?  That's for things like amphetamines, opiiods, codeine and pals. Stuff you need rehab if you take a lot of. Addictive stuff.

So I was just listening to a song that I hadn't listened to in a while. As I was listening, I realized that the song is a brief summary of the plot of my old D&D campaign. I wouldn't put it past past me to base it heavily on that song, but what surprised me was that I didn't remember that I'd done so.

Either that or it's a complete coincidence.

I've run a short campaign based on  Singring and the Glass Guitar

It's a conspiracy! People will start making their own acetaminophen-ibuprofen mixes in bathtubs at home, and then the government will start doing raids to catch them and lock them away forever to replace the lost convicts from cannabis-related crimes!

Other than that, yeah... "your liver is fucked" is different from "I need a fix or I can't sleep or think or eat straight".

So, I was just informed about an amazing new schedule 2 pain reliever.

Maxigesic.

Its active ingredients?

Ibuprofen, and Acetaminophen.  (AKA, Motrin and Tylenol, respectively.  Both are OTC*.)

*The composition appears to be 500mg Acetaminophen and 150mg Ibuprofen. Admittedly, a 500mg acetaminophen is pretty large, and potentially hepatotoxic. It is still available OTC in that dosage.
How the fuck do they regard that as having potential for abuse?

I don't know about that. Obviously NSAIDs can have liver toxicity, and obviously paracetamol (which nowadays they do not classified among NSAIDs anymore due to it being deficient in the "AI" bit... but that's just semantics) has a potential for liver toxicity as well. But I'm not aware of the combination being particularily nasty and in fact we used to resort to alternating paracetamol and NSAIDs back in my old place.

I’ve been reading Lovecraft’s stuff recently, and I was digging around, before finading something oht. It seems that he may have given instructions on how to promounce Cthulu, meaning that it isn’t promounced C-thoo-loo, it’s pronounced more like something akin to CTGHLGH. I wish I hadn’t discovered this, on behalf of my shredded vocal cords if nothing else.

I ignore all pronunciation guides for lovecraftian stuff, since it's supposed to be beyond mortal comprehension, and the spellings and vocalisations for these things are mere approximations.  But then again, Lovecraft did get a bit soft in his later works.

I got interested in looking for an audio recording of one of his stories being read, and came across a video with a fellow who apparently pronounced it correctly (as "correctly" as it can be pronounced).

It was an experience, yes.

Pretty much this.  But by his standards, we could have the old ones walking down the street and we would be OK with it these days. (Most of his "madness" was the realization that Victorian standards of behavior, culture, status, etc were all hollow vanities, and the psychic implosion of people that based their worldview on these things.  Considering how far removed our culture currently is from that kind of silliness, he would view our culture as quite corrupt indeed.  I suspect he would liken us to the culture he described in The Mound.)

Personally, I would be very intrigued by the prospect of a candid conversation with one of his Elder Things, rather than repulsed.

No (and no).

The elder things created microbiotic and early animal life on earth after traveling here from outer space. They have a thing for eating meat, but do not seem overtly malicious in their candor.  They killed the Antarctic researchers for vivisecting their friends.

The kin-yan (from The mound) look like tall humans. They have an insular but culturally left-/liberal social norms otherwise. They are immortal and powerful psychics and telekinetics. Of course, they worship great old ones, but aside from their justifiable fear of being exterminated by humans really don't sound all that bad.)

Quote
When the denizens of K'n-yan rejected their mechanistic lifestyle, they turned to a sort of socialistic aristocracy, controlled by a ruling class made "highly superior through selective breeding and social evolution".[5] Individual behavior is dictated more by established social norms than the rule of law. Although K'n-yan attained great advances in art and science, its people have become increasingly hedonistic, decadent, and cruel.

The people of K'n-yan also utilize undead slaves, reanimated from the bodies of ancient enemies or inferior members of the ruling class. They attained immortality and subjugated other races before them thanks to their technology and ability to dematerialize and rematerialize at will. The underground people also customarily engage in several forms of sadism, depraved practices, ritualistic orgies and unspeakable horrors such as extended public torture, random body modifications and mutilations of other slave species as entertainment, in order to gratify their time-dulled senses.

Despite their advanced technology and mental powers, the people of K'n-yan usually dress in ancient fashion and are only equipped with melee weaponry for their protection.

Eugenically chosen aristocracy, sadistic torture of foreigners, eternal slavery as a whim punishment. I'd love to visit.

Sounds like alt-left to me.

(You also have to include the evil practices of human kind if you intend a fair comparison. )

If you actually read the story that features them, they try to integrate the protagonist. One even fancies him, and goes with his escape plan.  For a race with such baggage, they only presented that face when confronted with the threat of being wholly discovered by the human race.
