Also generic undead like zombies and skeletons aren't intelligent at all, iirc.

Let's explore this. What makes undead intelligent? Brain tissue? State of decay?
Are zombies or skeletons smarter? Why a lich?

If a vampire is commanded by their progenitor, and the "lesser undead" are commanded by a necromancer, is a lich commanded by its phylactery?
Is the glorious "life beyond death" a tormented existence trapped within a pennant, making and commanding meat puppets in a desperate attempt to stave off the claustrophobic insanity?

Not to be the fun police but I think in vanilla D&D (Greyhawk or whatever) the mind resides in the soul, rather than the brain. Zombies are dumb because they're soulless. Liches are intelligent despite their lack of a brain due to them possessing a soul.

edit: Saw some troll get banned (none of the regulars), I think that person was peddling some conspiracy theory earlier, not sure.

Given who was banned it was probably the antisemitism (or at least language) and conspiracy peddling, yes. Near as I can tell it was something a bit back and boss toad just woke up/got around to seeing reports.
