On a similar but unrelated note, my father apparently thinks that calling the US Department of Defense as such rather than the "War Department" is "PC".

Yeah, "politically correct". He's usually pretty accepting for somebody who's obsessed with 80s culture and thinks machine guns should be on sale at the department store, but for some reason everything that he doesn't like that he perceives as censorship or as being new is branded "PC".

Well. It is PC, it's a softer and less direct way of describing what it is.

It was called the U.S. Department of War from the 1780s until 1947, when they split the Air Force off from the Army. Those two and the Department of the Navy were consolidated into an organization which was renamed as the DoD a few years later.

The DoD has control over more than national defense, as you notice. And speaking of "national defense", when was the last time the U.S. fought a defensive war? The JSDF is the only national military I know of that can actually justifiably be described in such terms, and that only because of the constitutional mandate.

Well, yes, you could say it's politically correct under a really, really broad definition of the term :v

Political correctness [...] is a term which, in modern usage, describe language, policies, or measures which are intended not to offend or disadvantage any particular group of people in society

"Department of Defense" sounds nicer than "Department of War", but it's not really offensive, per se. My point is that he's, if not outright misapplying the term, using a definition so broad you could accuse practically any change of being "POLITICALLY CORRECT", as the term is so often framed. Something like "sugar-coating" would've made more sense.

(Although I must add I did always think that "Department of Defense" is misleading for the U.S.)
