Stepdad bought sesame chicken for dinner. Probably due to the fact that chickens are fungaloids. Either that, or the stuff is made solely out of chicken hearts and livers(which in hindsight could technically be possible knowing the take-out place).

I like minis because they're like action figures, but you can customize them. And the ones on the websites look really cool, and they have decorations and they're painted really well and have custom bits, and they're really tiny so you can have a lot on display at once.

I mean, not that I can afford to buy miniatures. $8 for six Space Marines, after literal days of shopping around on Chinese websites, is not the best deal ever.

Yeah this is literally over a HUNDRED dollars for individual figures and he's clearly trying to get my support to buy them.

I actually pointed out the FAR cheaper unpainted versions and was like "hey you could enjoy custom-painting them!" and he was like "Wow no that's too much work"

My mum was watching a program about Obamacare, and one woman that was interviewed by a newstation when it was in the procss of being implemented said, with 100% seriousness, that socialism is taking a person's money away and giving it to people that don't deserve it.

That's the viewpoint you end up with when you believe that it's the fault of the poor that they're poor, and that the rich are rich through hard work and contributing to society, and that they thus both deserve what they have.

Sorry for doublepost but...

Someone I care about cares a lot for miniatures.  Particularly Transformers ones.  I just called them models and "It's not a model, it's a toy"


Anyway I have trouble understanding his need for more plastic figurines.  I keep buying interesting games, but only because I can afford too, and I spent so many years living off a few floppies, then demo CDs, then freeware and java/flash games.

I don't understand what would compel someone to spend over a hundred dollars on a moderately interesting plastic toy
But then, I didn't understand that old fling's obsession with comic books either.  I understand why she loved the new Batman movies, but comics in general?  Different strokes, I suppose.

Yeah that's not miniatures. Transformers toy collecting is a quite different form of nerddom than miniatures collecting. And custom painting them doesn't have much of an appeal save for a very small ultra hardcore subset of the fanbase due to the nature and feel of the lore and story along with the complexity of the toys. It's more about collecting your favorite characters and designs solely to have a cool piece of the franchise on your shelf along with obtaining the rare and limited edition pieces.

Ever read the webcomic Shortpacked? It's writer is a pretty big name guy in the transformers fandom and so the topic is brought up a lot, though not quite in a direct way most of the time. Could be helpful if you want to understand better.

I don't find it surprising that people don't understand the difference, they're trying to understand a new concept, but only within the framework of what they know. e.g. they think socialism = welfare. Some people do actually invoke the spirit of socialism when justifying welfare or taxing the rich however, which muddies the waters, but the original concept of socialism had nothing to do with that.

Welfare only really exists as a concept within a capitalist framework. The Soviet Union / Cuba etc had 100% employment, because jobs were assigned. If you weren't working at all, it wasn't because you were lazy, it was because you were disabled or something. If there were excess workers, then a use could always be found for them, hence there was no concept of unemployment or welfare. Whereas a capitalist system needs unemployment because there needs to be a liquid pool of available labor for employers, thus it needs a welfare system to prevent too many people starving to death. BTW "full employment" e.g. <2% unemployment is often touted as the Golden Age of capitalist societies, but the only reason that was maintainable was because they were the periods of high immigration, hence the economy could run at near zero unemployment, yet still have a liquid pool of labor to hire. What this means, is that lowering immigration means higher baseline unemployment, not less.

So, basically the "welfare state" isn't a concept that came out of Marxism, it came out of capitalism itself. It was actually a conservative: Bismarck who pioneered the concept.

Similarly, "high taxes" isn't a concept from Marxism either. Because "taxes" only exist as a concept in a capitalist economy. In Marx's time they were dead against taxes of any kind, because that is class-based exploitation, which is what Marxism was against. But, later they soften the idea and said that a very low rate of taxation would be necessary, to pay for roads and similar public infrastructure. Hence, actual Marxism is actually pretty close to libertarianism in it's implementation of the "State", but they differ on how they think local governance should occur: free market vs local councils.
