Yeah I always assumed second-cousins were okay.  Though in my family two brothers married two sisters, so certain cousins might be more related than normal?  Dunno how that works.

What bothers me more is that they used white to represent "unknown" and nearly-white to represent part of the scale.  That's confusing chart-making.  "unknown" should be something neutral to the scale, like blue.

And furthermore, I know data may be lacking, but it really should go by states when possible.  Canada and the USA are not single demographics for something like this...

Heck most slavic countries seem to have it covered when it comes to avoiding incest.

It makes me happy to see the USA at <1%. I also notice that Sudan and Pakistan have the dubious distinction of being the only countries where the majority of marriages are consanguineous. Frankly, it baffles me.

I actually think that USA and Russia might be so low due to their size. If it was measured by states or something it would be more accurate. After all, we all know of this stereotypical American hillbilly who "has keept it in family" since like ten generations.

Wouldn't size and low population density actually encourage incest?
If you live in Siberia in a smallish village you are probably more prone to rub uglies with a cousin than fresh outside blood.
Mainly because fresh blood is several hundred kilometers of frozen tundra (or impassable mud) away.
Then again you have the scientists in Russia going "sod that" we'll just get the statistics from Moscow and leave before someone robs us."
