As I said in the spoiler, sure YouTube makes it possible, but YouTube wouldn't have a business if people didn't upload to them. Plenty of video websites crash and fail, for that and other reasons. Look at blip.tv, it's gone, and was a pretty big one too.

It may be nice of them, but I doubt they do it for any nicety. It's just good business sense; more people will upload to you, and upload better quality (or at least more popular quality), if they get paid for it.

I don't know the details, of course. As long as YouTube is fair in their dealings, then I see no problem. Fair defined here as a) not arbitrary in who can monetize, and what videos can monetize, b) not arbitrary in what CAN'T monetize, and c) related to the last one, if the cannot monetize bit is because of copyright shenanigans, doesn't go "Oh, sorry, there's copyrighted material in that, you can't get any ad revenue from that!" and then turn around and make ad money off of the video anyway, which I have ~heard~ inklings of, but by no means have any off-hand proof of it at the moment. If I'm wrong and that doesn't happen, then alright, fair is fair.

Bay12 absolutely refused to load, and once or twice I got messages about XML parsing errors that I've never seen before. Youtube video continued playing, I opened up a dozen new tabs to different sites which all loaded instantly. B12 still wouldn't load.

Then it stopped, randomly. I suspect my browser; I've only been using Pale Moon for a couple days but it's already served up enough wonky behavior to match Firefox's from a whole month.

But yeah, if you don't like Youtube's terms of service you can upload to Dailymotion or something, or host your own gigabytes of streaming video.  In the meantime, they can do whatever you agreed to when you signed up.  The only limit is that extreme measures might make people *actually* switch to an alternative.  Except that users don't really care about content creators and their issues...  And if you're not on Youtube, you've probably lost most of your audience.

Is that fair?  I think so.  Google's offering a free service to make money, take it or leave it.

I just found out I may have accidentally caused world war 3 in Might & Fealty. Just heard rumor that the biggest empire in the game is planning to wage a crusade against my realm. Most likely due to all the fun RP we've been taking part in. Heh. Completely unexpected, too.

Soundcloud is pretty great tbh.

I don't see how people can compare it to bandcamp when they are pretty fundamentally different. Soundcloud is for sharing music and following people so you can easily see their new stuff, and bandcamp is a platform for independent artists to sell their music.
