Careful, some people are into that.

Some very, very flexible people.
fixed

I don't know about you, but in the news I also heard people saying that more often than not people would actually get their files decrypted by paying.
And as much as it may shock you, a lot of if not most people do not back up their shit.

Dont pay.  Paying enables the criminals to extort more money from more victims. Just dont pay.  Recover your data through other means, or suck it up and accept that pictures of Mittens the Kitten is not worth the grief you are going to help perpetuate by paying.

Data professionals tell you to keep data archived in secure locations anyway. Things like this biting people who willfully ignore sound advice like that because "meh, who has time for that?" may eventually get people to stop being stupid with their data.

I am wondering if the Forum games section would benefit from separate recruit and play areas.

Ohh well I'll just allow myself three bumps in the forum game section for recruiting.

Recover your data through other means
I just want to be clear - unless you kept up-to-date backups, or you're lucky enough for that decryption tool to happen to know the key used to encrypt your shit, there is no way to do this. Strong encryption is strong encryption.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Your data comes from other sources; Photos come from your camera, MP3s are all stored redundantly in your itunes and in your ipod, etc.

"other means"  covers everything from "Use undelete tools on your camera's SD card to get deleted pictures back" to "Gather up disparate data from all over your network of personal devices to get it back again."

(The prospect of breaking strong encryption was never a consideration. There's other ways to restore missing data from a person's constellation of devices and storage systems.)

Times like this cryptolocker crap make me somewhat glad all of my files are on a computer that is completely isolated from any other computer. Not by choice, of course, but still.

There's also the VSS service enabled by default on windows 8 and newer versions of windows.  "Previous versions" should net you the unencrypted files. ;)

Of course, that's easy enough for attackers to disable prior to encrypting all your shit for you.

Better is to have security encumbered remote storage that has your backups on it.  Many home routers these days offer a USB port on the back that you can slap an external HDD onto.  Usually painfully slow (because of misconfigured SAMBA on the router...) but serviceable.

security encumbered remote storage
Definition please? Can't find it on Google.

Kind of weird how people will tweet things saying just "this is so important". I'm pretty sure that sentence is only meant to be used in that context if it's by people taking the piss out of e-vangelism type internet "activism".

Well, to be fair, having high grades doesn't mean they're necessarily smart. It could just mean they have a lot of studying time on their hands or something.
