This. The trivial name of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde is 'vanillin', which is just that one aldehyde that gives vanilla its distinct aroma. Actual vanilla extract contains a host of impurities and is less homogenous due to being made by a plant instead of in a lab; thus it is ever o slightly different from just vanillin. No comment on which one is better, though.
