Depends on what they're doing at the dentist. If it's just a routine cleaning and you've kept your teeth clean they can easily just scrape any gunk off without even using a drill. Not really painful, no meds needed. Might be uncomfortable but having people cramming their fists into your mouth in the name of hygiene is bound to be uncomfortable anyway.

... yeaaaah, painkillers in case of significant pain is okay, but... it's goddamn unpleasant. Just less unpleasant than the pain. It's just. Yeah, not feeling is gorram horrible. But there's pain worse than that. If you're chronic to the point it's either pain of that level or not feeling indefinitely, it's time to kill yourself.

I... kinda' wish that was an exaggeration, but at least for me it's very much not. Having both felt non-feeling and about the worst pain a human can feel, if I were stuck with the only choice being between one or the other it would be suicide time. I blame no one for taking that route out at that point.

Before that point, avoiding both as much as possible is good juju.

Wisdom teeth removal having involved both laughing gas and opiates, I am now continuing to be incredibly confused how anyone can enjoy those sensations. Freaking unpleasant. Better than the alternative, but freaking unpleasant.

My dad doesn't meds at the dentist for drilling either. He says he doesn't like the lack of feeling that lasts for a few hours afterwards.

I tried it once too.

Sometimes, I enjoy not feeling. Then again, chronic pain from injuries will do that to a guy.

Also, you get punched in a broken nose, you ask for painkillers, no questions. It hurts. A lot.

I'm immune to painkillers. Or at least they have a much lessened effect on me, to the point where I need at least ten needles worth of painkiller to visit the dentist, and that only dulls the pain.
I was told that I should avoid surgery if possible because I would probably wake up halfway through.

I have sleeping pills that make me unable to feel and don't help me sleep... Maybe I should take those before going to the dentist next time.

I've never actually been to a dentist, come to think of it. My teeth are fine, seeing as I brush them semi-regularly, but yeah. Never had the ole' drill-mirror-what-have-you shoved in my gob.

I've had two surgeries in my life: a wisdom tooth removal surgery (minor, relative to the possible other surgeries) and a more major one.  Still didn't take pain narcotics for very long, because high pain tolerance for the win.
