It's the red queen/inflation theory of commercial hard-drives. You can get 2terabytes of space but because such HDD sizes are becoming the norm, creators feel able to take up more room in your hard-drive. Therefore it needs to get bigger and bigger just to stay the "same" size (relative to number of modern games it can store) and each gigabyte is not "worth" as much as they were ten years ago.

Soon the only factor in favour of game -size limits and optimization will be bandwidth caps and download speeds.

The main thing that drives game size nowadays are textures and movies. Older games compressed their textures to save space, resulting in long load times for the same level of graphics (because it is not as simple as just loading the texture into RAM, it has to decompress it as well). Because storage space is absurdly cheap nowadays, it is better to leave them uncompressed for faster load times. It is n't bloat so much as a tradeoff.

Whelp, I guess memory optimizations are obsolete now.

Memory? its hard drive space, not RAM. If the game needed 40 gigs of memory, almost no one short of servers or top of the line desktops would even be able to run it in the first place.

Hard drive space is a kind of memory. It's not usually called non-volatile memory for these very ambiguity reasons, but Sergarr did say "static", which already rules out RAM, I'm reasonably sure.

One word: Internet.

Anyone with an internet connection and two minutes can make a website, especially with tumblr. Therefore, you can have literally anything a person can possibly, remotely think is interesting or a funny joke as a website. It only takes one, and there are a whoooole lot of people connected.
