It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.  Louis Kane, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Au Bon Pain, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.

The hallway smelt of stale bread and old pastries. At one end of it a chart, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply their debts over time, though Louis couldn't see the line as the line for the chart was situated on their Moon Base. Louis made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for the monthly pennies payment. The office was seven flights up, and Louis went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, opposite of the lift shaft, the poster with the blank chart gazed from the wall. It was one of those charts which are totally pointless because their debts transcend mankind's understanding. BIG DEBTOR IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.

So this dude comes in to the place I work and wants ice cream. Our ice cream machine is perpetually broken for whatever reason, and he must have been coming in every day for a week. Every time we explain the machine is broken, he has a little rage fit and storms out in a rain of cussing. After the third time I've seen it, I just have to wonder what's so special about our ice cream.
