It's the marketing angle.

See, you are approaching this wrong.  You are approaching it from a young adult, long past woodstock era person's perspective, where 1960's psychodelia is "cliche', old, and boring, and lacks imagination or interest."

However, there are a *LOT* of burned out hippies out there, who are now going "Finally maaaan! Like, We ca totally get strung out on some hash, and like, not have the man come down on us! Righteous brother! Let's call up the gang and go hang out with mary jane!" When they see such a sign.

To them, the crappy lithographed font, horrendous color choice, tacky presentation, and cliche' nature of such an advert brings back fond memories of youth, and sucks them in like flies to shit.

Such a headshop is not advertising to young people. It's advertising to old people with too much money who are part of the old drug culture.

What about if Nic Cage plays Jace?
Not even then. Although Cage probably would be a good choice for a professional... blah. Can I call Jace a mind rapist without getting accused of exaggerating a fictional character for shock value? Because that's actually a very good description of the impression I've got, it's just that, well, fictional character, and it's very obvious to me that my opinion is not universally held. I just can't think of another word that conveys my perspective.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

It's a free weekend. You can play it for free until Sunday and it'll uninstall itself afterward.

It's odd that they chose a mostly single player game for a free weekend. If you worked at it, you could probably finish it by Sunday.

It has got multiplayer function, though note that if you're in Australia you can only play with other Australians due to the unique version that was released here.

I suppose they're hoping you'll find it enough fun you buy it afterwards.

I can see that working. In fact, at least a quarter of games I own I bought after procurement involving rum in copious amounts.

Well, that was a fun half hour. Locked myself out of the room with the computer after changing the doorknob. And my keys, and wallet, and my pants, and the lights were left on, and... well, there was a lot of stuff in here. Eventually ended up basically kicking the door in after about twenty minutes of trying to jimmy the lock, but everything's okay now. Door's only slightly more damaged than it was to begin with. Which isn't exactly saying much. The doorknob was sticking, which finally annoyed me enough to swap the bloody thing out, and both the frame and the door itself was already fairly tore up. Previous owners, old house, yadda yadda.

Fun thing, though. There's now four doors in this house than can be locked with a key. None of them use the same key.

Also, we only know where keys for two of them are. It, uh. It's made for some interesting times. Really probably need to do something about it one of these days, but *shrug*

There are doorknobs used by managed properties, like apartment buildings, which are able to change based on what key you use. You could buy four of those, encode them with a single key, and be finished with it.

Also you really gotta keep spare keys somewhere.

Pay careful attention to the previous statements. Two of the doorknobs have no key :P Nothing to make a spare from, heh. The doorknob I used to replace this room's just happens to be one of them. And for all getting locked out was rather annoying, the doorknob that was being used before had finally got on my last nerve. It was worth it.

Or rather, the houseowners lost them before I got here, and never found them in the interim. Push comes to shove, I'll probably clear replacing the lot of them in the near future. Least the ones that have keys. It is slightly annoying to only have the key for one of the (three) doors into the place you're staying. Especially when someone else has the key for a different one, and the third has no key at all. Or get new keys made somehow or... something. S'kinda' annoying to contemplate swapping out otherwise functional equipment...

I just did some quick research and apparently student housing at the university I went to is more or less fairly priced. I think that might win the thread.

Fairly priced student housing?

Compared to what? You can't compare to the local realestate or rental markets surrounding the college, because demand is artificially inflated.  In my city, the "College Hill" area has astronomical rent, BECAUSE the university is right there, and the rentals are used because student housing is too expensive. Eventually the two reach price parity. It does not mean the two are fairly priced. It means the school wont expand student housing to drive down demand for rental housing.

My local uni has been on a mad expansion of its residential halls, and is building more despite those already there being partially empty. As a result, the private rental market has crashed in this area, with cheap rental houses sitting empty (with students choosing the cheaper dorm option), with locals unable to afford the rent - which is fixed higher than average when people took out large mortgages to make a fast buck renting at a profit to students.

Compared to the low end pricing of rentals throughout the same city. Location is a significant factor in housing price, so I can't exactly compare it to the next town over that doesn't have a university ballooning its population for 9 months out of the year. I'm comparing the per-person cost of the best student housing (which is a conveniently-located, furnished 4 person apartment with utilities, parking, a full bath and kitchen, free laundry, and air conditioning) to the cheapest one-person apartments (which have none of those things, or require you to pay extra for them, but have the advantage of not needing roommates).

That's only because of a subjective judgment on my part, however, that I'd be about as happy living in either. Looks like you could save about $100 a month by splitting the cost with roommates off-campus, but you could also save more than that by switching to a shittier residence hall.

Artificially inflated? Seems like there's good reason for its inflation...

In my city student housing is rather cheap - I literally live across the street from my institute, I share a big kitchen, two bathrooms, and two showers with five other people, and have a ~14 m2 room with a sink all to myself. At 220€ a month.
Two guys I know live two neighborhoods further out (which is really far away). They have a big flat all to themselves, but they pay something like 400 or 500€ each - that's only a bit less than what I get in total!
