There's been a massive amount of propaganda put out over the last forty years or so that presents the UN "Arms Control" initiatives (to interdict and attempt to shut down the international black market in military grade weapons), as "Gun Control" attempts (as in "We aim to force all UN members to disarm their citizens.").  It's completely wrong, but the terminology used makes it easy for laymen to be misinformed, particularly when the books and pamphlets are written by uninformed people who don't understand the difference.

I'm sure if the U.N. actually got things done, it would actually influence what people do to some extent. But they really don't get much done, they're basically an international version of the American Congress. People who think a U.N. disarmament could actually happen are far overestimating the motivations and abilities of the people in the U.N.
