I heard the director for 2001 A Space Odessy tried to do something different and weird, and it didn't work out. Probably because that director sucked. The sequel, 2010 Odyssey Two is WAY better, though a little campy at the end.
Stanley Kubrick DEFINITELY doesn't suck. This isn't a fanboy reaction either, as he was a pretty influential and important director. The entire thing did "work out" though, as a majority of the long scenes without much going on is when they show the spaceships (which were pretty damn good special effects for its time, and it's obvious why they'd want to spend a lot of time focusing on it) and the beginning (which wasn't even that long.) Did you even watch the movie?
I did years ago, and it was boring and it sucked. There are memorable quotes from it, but I found it incredibly dry, boring, random, and confusing. Did you watch it? One of the things that bothered me the most (and I just remembered it) was the moment that monkey threw that bone into the air and suddenly the movie cuts to a spaceship. The movie skipped over how many years in that single second? Millions of years? I mean I get it now, spaceships = tools = bones 'n things. I didn't get it when I watched it, and I'm pretty sure very few people understood that when it came out. And the movie didn't even keep the "my god it's full of stars" from the book.
It is very possible to make something so
arteeesssteeek~ that nobody gets it and it winds up a waste of time. *raeg* *raeg*
