College=/=Enlightenment. You're thinking of the process of growing older in and of itself. College represents that, but it doesn't necessarily do it.

Healthy, you mean. General elementary and high school curriculum sucks. I'm going to be homeschooling my kids.

You're absolutely right about there being bad colleges. So instead of saying college != enlightenment, I'd say good college = enlightenment (at least the type you wouldn't get under an apprenticeship or whatever).

The problem with making something like colleges universal for the reasons I gave is: some colleges are going to fail at the task and stupid people will blame the concept of going to college instead of the failings of the underperforming ones.

Honestly, I've never experienced the apparent anti-homeschooling social stigma that exists. Most people just go "That's awesome".

Yeah, having attended classes on 5 different campuses, from a Community College, to a small-town University, to a "Teaching School", to the two most prestigious Universities in my state... I can say that each was a fundamentally different experience, and was valuable to me in different ways. And also blew chunks in different ways.

The density of information and formative experiences you get in a College environment is more intense than you'll encounter learning on your own. Your minds are inundated with information for hours every day (from instructors, labs, reading, etc), and living in close proximity to others for months at a time tends to erupt into social experiences both good and bad as well.

I think I've learned academic material much more quickly in College than on my own... but I've developed my skills more significantly, got a better handle on my problems, and came closer to whatever approximates enlightenment while outside College. My experience was non-standard, though, so take this with several scoops of salt.

I'm under the impression a teaching school is a school that teaches you how to be a teacher, in the same way an engineering school teaches you how to be an engineer, and an art school teaches you how to negotiate late rent.

She represents one district out of eight.  Statewide offices are all Ds, 5 D congressmen, and D majorities in both House & Senate.  One batshit crazy woman doesn't discount all that; especially since North Carolina has Virginia Foxx, who is just as bad.

I don't feel that college is anything resembling a path to enlightenment on any level. There are two major benefits to college, though; you're actually introduced to an environment where it is possible to learn (children do not make good students ), and that same environment allows you to better practice critical thinking and openly discuss subjects with your peers, and your instructors. My instructors have (short of that damnable psychology instuctor) generally treated themselves as being peers of their students, and thus students are more willing and more often permitted to ask serious questions or present information they've accumulated outside of class.

What exactly do you define as a "path to enlightenment," then? Because both the major benefits you yourself say college gives are things I would consider "paths to enlightenment," especially the critical thinking one.
