Camp is one thing but it doesn't describe the array in which one can love something that is terrible.

Camp is just sort of the "affectionate" weirdness you can see... but Camp in it of itself isn't nessisarily bad. Things can be campy but not bad.

Liking something because it is extremely camp but isn't "bad" for it, isn't an ironic enjoyment. Hense why I wouldn't use that word to define it.

Neo. Neo, friend neo. Fanfiction. Fan. Fiction. Which 50 shades is. There are people. Who legitimately enjoy. Absolutely terrible fanfiction. Not because they like it ironically, but because it presses little joynubs in their brain that makes them happy. That legolas and johnny depp are boinking each other or whatever. There's no need to be confused. Just accept that some folks are wired differently and roll with it.

Yeah SOME people... I like lots of Cinamon on my Pies and applesauce but I wouldn't say that would be the optimal strategy for a wide net.

Which is what confused me. I mean Twilight is bad but its appeal comes from the fact that it channels its audiance perfectly.

As someone who read Stephanie Mieyer's works before Twilight once said: She is a terrible writer but amazing author.

50 shades of grey however? From what I hear of it, it doesn't seem to have many elements I thought could attact non-ironic attention from large portions of the populous.

Camp is more closely related to cheesiness then it is to being bad.  Like Red Alert.  Campy as hell, but can still be considered good.

I honestly cannot understand how someone can like 50 SoG.  I tried to read part of it before I knew what it was, I couldn't get very far.  I can somewhat understand Twilight, even thou it isn't my sort of book.  But I honestly cannot understand 50 SoG's appeal.

Because sometimes, oh so rarely, they get it right. And it is glorious when they do.

Same reason people do variations on a motif in music, man. Sometimes it's interesting to see what happens when you poke an existing system. It's a neat exercise in extrapolation, and sometimes it's just fun to play with someone else's ideas.

And Max, most good fanfiction is absolutely nothing like that You're thinking primarily of Mary Sue crap, which is (almost) universally crap. A lot of the good stuff basically destroys the writer's favorite character (assuming they even have one. Some folks are more enamored to the scenario than any particular critter in it.).

It's why those fan-fics aren't all that popular.

One of the more "famous" (at least, most reviewed on ff.net) is a Harry Potter fic that puts everyone on such a pedestal. Raise the stakes. Make the hero super smart? Make his enemy super smart too.

There's also forums and stuff where people congregate and provide suggestions regarding the good stuff. Plus most aggregate sites tend to have favorites and stuff. Once you find one author or reader (there's often fic-less profiles that just contain a honking huge favorite list) that coincides with your tastes, you can often ride the wave of favorites for dozens of decent-to-good fics. Basically other people filter out the crap for you, to a large extent

But yeah, while I was cooking I figured out a much easier way to explain the phenomena. Goes like this:

You know what's great? "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" is great. You know what would be awesome? "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" done on flamenco guitar*. And, you know what? I can do that. I can do that, and then I can share it, and I increase the awesome of the world.

That, right there, is one of the major driving forces behind fanfiction. I mean. You can create something original and make an awesome thing, too, definitely. But in the end, it's still +1 awesome and that is a wonderful and oft-times fulfilling thing. Is the person who makes a good thing great really all that less of a thing than the person who simple makes a great thing? Maybe a bit less, sure. But they both make great things.

*I know this because I've heard "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" done on flamenco guitar, and it is awesome. E: Tangentially, Mozart on snare drum is pretty ballin'.
