Children are property until they hit 18. Far more protection than slavery of old, but still without human rights.

I wouldn't call it "totalitarian." I'd call it "temporary slavery."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They should have used -tan, for extra kawaiiness.

I'd like to see the opposite; Obama and Romney, two deadly samurai, locked in a duel to the finish, with exceedingly masculine faces and their eyes always shut.

And also chainsaw katanas. With rockets on them. And napalm.

Samurai.

Childhood, yes. Schools, not so much. After all, your lazy parents revolutionary colleagues can hide you from the enforcement officers of the latter. Eh, it's a matter of fine lines in either case.

The case involves Joseph Frederick, a then 18-year-old high school senior in Juneau, Alaska, 24 at the time of the decision, who was suspended for 10 days after displaying a "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner across the street from his high school during the Winter Olympics Torch Relay in 2002.[1]

My first secondary school had a dissident student newspaper once. Of course, it got quickly banned or something. Yay freedom of speech!
Students don't have freedom of speech. Or property rights. Or freedom of choice (in quite a few respects). So in essence schools model a fairly nonviolent sort of totalitarian state.

Schools are run by all the people who are too fascist for politics. And they are indoctrinating children to be complacent with that kind of oppression.

I remember that right before they left 6th form, some of the 6th formers drew a bunch of enourmous phallic representations on paper, cut them out, and tied them to helium balloons. And let them go in the main hall, where almost everyone went through every day to get somewhere. It was about 15m high, and at least 7m wide.
I felt a little bad for the caretakers, but eh.

Regardless of that court ruling, the reality is children don't have many rights at all when it comes to school. School uniforms and dress codes are expressly for the purpose of limiting free speech.

It'd be different if we were talking about private schools. Public ones, however, shouldn't be have worse limitations than what people have in public parks or walking down the street, yet they do.

Heh, the local highschool around here has teachers/students that are the absolute trolliest. They pile snow around peoples cars and onced released 4300 helium balloons into the school, a fair few of them popped, and all the C02/carbon monoxide/other gas alarms went off.

Bullshit. Prepare to see a Court ruling.

Yeah, pretty much no school even cares about that. Parents generally don't have enough money to take it to court, so why bother?

They are limiting offensive symbols and increasing order.  If children didnt wear shirts like

 "rub here for hand lotion"
and "buck fush"
and "ICP, murdering bitches for lyf"
and "Don't go to high school, go to school high"

than this may not be a problem.  I myself was made they confincated my spiked necklace on the grounds that I could wrap it around my hands to make a weapon (Harford High was a baaad school, had a 68% dropout rate, and I was the only white kid).

It a comprimise between order, values and freedom and expression.

Around here, you wear a tshirt with a skull on it, or really anything that is even remotely related to violence, video games, or anti-authority they will kick you out.

Well hey, if you want, provoke yout teachers, then invoke the ruling. Worst case scenario, you get to humiliate them in court. No way it legally will stand. Thats assuming your willing to go to court. Hmm, we need someone willing to do that. have them rule that clothing is not distracting.

BTW, my school is fairly totalitarian in this matter too, Ever heard of Slutty Wednesday? That was my school.

Again, US Supreme court is god. When they banned prayer in schools, it freaking stayed banned. All we need is one person willing to tale the jump and do it, to free us all.

The first thing that'd need to be established is that "distracting" is not good enough reason to ban clothing. I can understand stuff like huge afros if it gets in the way of other people's vision, but having a anti authoritarian shirt on is perfectly fine.

Also, you can't expect kids to defend themselves here. I don't think they legally can. Remember, much of the time, the parents are on the school's side. The oppressed don't really have the legal system to protect them.

I don't think we need people without an agenda saying they "banned prayer in schools" when they just banned teacher-led prayer.

Don't add fuel to the fire. You're just encouraging them.
