In a stroke of genious my dad decided to use microwave oven as timer by putting it on as empty. The machine went bonkers and started smoking black smoke. I can't understand why he thought it would be a good idea, but I quess I should be used to him doing stuff like this.

Naw I understood what you said. My microwave has an option though to start a timer without actually trying to cook anything. It'll still beep at the end and everything.
