It's a metaphor.  At least, it's interpreted as much in church these days.  It pretty much means just be a more dedicated believer.  Which is well... what quite a lot of the Bible says anyway.  Literally and metaphorically.

I thin Islam actually calls Christianity and Judaism something along the lines of "Brothers". You don't see that used alot these days, though, probably because of the tension we caused by shoving Israel in there.
