I don't think my school had any security.
There was like... a metre-high fence and a sign telling any non-student invaders to report to admin. Our procedure in case of danger/attack was for everyone to go and march slowly over to the gym and sit in alphabetical order. At least doing those drills was better than actual schoolwork...

FAKEEDIT: Ninja'd four times. OW, I thought they were to keep the kids IN
I'm of the mindset that treating kids like prisoners doesn't really help anyone.

Better than my school. We had no fence, and half the neighbourhood used it as a shortcut to get to the dairy.

We also had a cop visit once (twice?) to talk about... something? She liked the word diddle. I can't remember her name. We called her Constipated Egg, because kids.

It helps the people living near the school not have to put up with bratty kids getting into their stuff. :P

Hoo boy, schools being weird about budding sexuality, yep.

I think Frumple is one of the most likely to be able to corroborate this, at least among the folks I know here, but I've lived places where when you've got ~20 sixteen and seventeen year olds dancing you've also got about a dozen chaperones. The line I recall the most (as chaperones physically pulled couples apart during slow dances) is "Leave room for Jesus!", indicating the gap created between them.

Hell, think I might have mentioned that one before.

Yes, school cops. Just about every school in America now has uniformed, badge-wearing, gun-carrying police officers assigned to them as security. The school near where I live also has a fence surrounding it and guard posts at most of the gates.

I wouldn't say almost all schools. It depends on the area you live in. The town I'm from my high school had a cop, but they were there more as a liason in case of any incidents happening, and mostly sat in the office and filled out paperwork. In hindsight I think I've only seen him like twice the entire time I was there, once at a presentation and the other was to report the time that my wallet got stolen. Nearly forgot he existed until I started writing this post.

In comparison however when the leadership class I took senior year had a exchange event thing with students from a Chicago inner city school, one of the biggest points of difference that were brought up was the fact that at the Chicago school had cops/security guards all over the place.

Though I've been at college for the last couple years, so maybe things have changed in reaction to recent events *shrug*.

The most I've seen in regards to the sexuality issue was that we had a bunch of campaigns to get people to stop grinding eachother at the school dances. People making out in the hallways was pretty common. Only really would be commented on if the amounts of people doing it simultaneously reached critical mass, which would normally result in hilarious amounts of snark being shouted down the halls.

Yeah, schools in my area each have a police officer present, but their main duties consist of:
1) Acting as a liason in case of any incidents
2) Filling out paperwork
3) Chasing down any ditchers
4) Coming to physically intercede with extreme problem kids so the teachers don't have to deal with the parents claiming that they "assaulted" the kid (for which many a false claim has been attempted in schools near I live by idiot parents who think their druggie kids are perfect angels).

The high school in my town does have a fence, but it was more implemented to stop the extreme number of ditcher problem kids that they were having by forcing outbounds traffic to go right in front of the office door during the school day more than it was intended to act as a security checkpoint type of thing.

My last highschool had one police officer assigned, that was it. He didn't do much overall, because other than kids getting stoned in their cars in the parking lot and beating the shit out of each other occasionally, or running off during lunch break (we had an open campus policy during lunch break: go home if you feel like, just make it back to class or you're suspended or expelled. Totes makes sense.), nothing ever happened.

The only thing that would get you in more shit than starting fights or getting stoned was having your rifle visible in your vehicles' window. Quite a few kids were avid hunters in the area, and would forget to remove their hunting rifles from their truck when they went to school. So they'd stuff it under the seats and pretend nobody saw anything. :P

When I was attending school in Iowa, there were a couple bomb threats. Not related to the science teacher setting the ceiling on fire, oddly. There was also a bomb threat when I was in elementary school in northern Idaho. And then there was the meth lab that exploded a few blocks away.

My school has precisely no cops. Presumably, this is related to the fact that I'm in the middle of nowhere and I haven't actually heard of any physical violence incidents on campus in... a few months, I think?

Yeah, we didn't have a cop either. We did have a security guard, but he was just a near-retiree that wandered around watching for ditchers and kids popping out to smoke, and directing traffic when school let out. I did see him break up a fight once, but as far as I was aware our hoodlums were more concerned with being somewhere other than school to do whatever it is hoodlums do than anything else, and kept their other sketchy activities elsewhere.

I distinctly recall seeing one of our security goons taze an autistic kid who refused to open his backpack.

One of the rare situations where the actual cop on the grounds was both less violent and less of a dickhead than the rentacops.

My high school had a few school cops. 2 guys and a woman I think they had some kind of weekly shift system or something cuz there was usually only one or two around at any one time.  I did hear some girl got tazed by one of them once but I don't recall too many details of it other than it involved drugs somehow and it made the local news.

I went to two different schools (in the US), over 15 years ago, and both only had one or two security officers, no fences, no metal detectors, kids weren't being arrested for things that they'd have normally been suspended for, like I'm reading about happening now.

The one difference that stuck out most in my mind between the two schools is this one:

At the first school, the doors were left unlocked and students could go outside, so some would go outside and smoke out by the bus port (I knew them). The security officer would occasionally come along, but could never catch them in the act because lookouts, of course. Since the wind was generally pretty strong there, it tended to blow the smoke away.

At the second school, the doors were kept locked (since columbine hadn't occurred yet, I assumed it was to stop folks from either going outside to smoke or leaving school), and so instead, the bathrooms all smelled like cigarette smoke. I think you can probably guess which one I preferred.

(There were other notable differences too, but this post is already long enough and I can't draw any conclusions from the others.)

We had a resource officer guy; probably a police officer but with a different title and more or less the same job description as im2amroy's (Stand around in the general area of the cafeteria, probably do paperwork, deal with teachers often). Except we didn't have a fence, if you wanted to walk out you had to walk through the parking lot.

We have a policeperson on campus at my school but mostly I think that's just a precaution, there's been, what... One bash-in-car-window theft in 3+ years?  Certainly no actual violence that I know of.  Or otherwise illegal stuff, for that matter.

Then again, private school so yeah.
