The onions are the...brown-ish gelatin-like things.Pretty juicy, nicely crunchy and healthy, too.

eh, some people like them. It's all a matter of opinion. But yeah, stateside, onion rings are deep fried onion stuff that are certainly not supposed to be near "authentic" ethnic cuisine.

Re: dingy hole-in-the-wall places being good: If they've been around for a while and they're popular enough to still be in business despite the less-than-stellar atmosphere, they have to be doing something right. It might not necessarily be authentic, but it probably tastes fucking delicious.
