Got a dusting of silver at 42. People still occasionally think I'm in my late 20s, early 30s.

I started going gray at 24. My sister was almost completely grey by 17. You get used to it, or you buy hair dye.

i think i figured out why the software testing team got dissolved and its members embedded in development streams-

don't have to pay one manager to manage the team if we're just attached to six other pre-existing teams

and as a 'self governing community of practice, we need to collectively document and identify our own problems and solutions'

That's because no one wants to pay for QA teams. Why do it when the devs, or your customers, can do QA for you!

I mean, we still have/are QA, and yeah, upper crust is pretty quick to cut corners on testing (see also: not having a manager) (see also: can you guys test around this fundamental failure in our program so we can promote changes) (see also: these five items are priority one and what do you mean we can't have five priority one items)

Honestly would love to see QA unionize so that we don't get fucked at every end on wage/hours/metrics so that we stop producing fast-fashion software that disintegrates as soon as you look at something that isn't the happy path (like, remember that game RAGE by id software? There were, like, spiral staircases built into indoor structures which a) you could not get to because it was hidden behind rubbish) and b) actually just spiraled into the ceiling and hard stopped there because they figured nobody would, y'know, look up at where the staircase goes), or, like with my current software I'm employed for, pointing out that a product that's always added with another product will look correct in the backend but only when it's not bundled with a second product, where the whole thing shits the bed.

A coworker fell into an around 10cm gap and wounded his foot. Not very unlikely.

But rather than welding a plate over the gap (or a grate if for whatever reason they want stuff to be able to fall down the gap), they decided to put a railing around the gap.
The gap is in a single piece of floor, so there is no way that the sides of the gap could move relative to each other, and is in the way, so putting a railing around it is quite annoying as everybody has to walk around.

Heh, we had a manhole cover that's open most of the time and our work safety person insisted something be done about it. So the maintenance guys (who are pretty much the only ones with any business near the damn thing) took a pallet, wrote "Don't fall in" on it in bold letters and placed it over the cover.

So far, no one has fallen in, so it must be a pretty effective solution.

Don’t do what one of my friends did and move the pallet, then forget about it and then walk over the hole.

He’s lucky the hole wasn’t bigger because folk had been throwing glass down it for some reason, and it was a decent-sized drop too.
