What's in a name?
« on: October 04, 2010, 02:52:26 pm »

(Imagine something along the lines of "A dwarf by any other name would smell like old socks" here.)

I know that people use "Urist" all the time as a generic dwarf name, male or female.  Lots of folks, though, think of Urist as a female name, after association with that hermit challenge thread.

Now . . . I've deliberately avoided using nicknames for my dwarves so I could focus on/get used to the funky "dwarven language" thing, and this means that I've developed lots of associations for names.  I'm sure there are posts about this somewhere, but I haven't seen them in my cursory inspection, so: do you associate anything with any given dwarf name?  For me . . .

Medtob: female name.  (She was the first mother I had in my first successful fort.)
Asmel: male, specifically a child.  (He was her son.  Also, the last dwarf to die in the whole fort when HFS arrived.)
Catten: female, also a child.  (I believe she was one of the first immigrant children.  She died so quickly.)
Deduk and Degėl: associated with axes, either for woodcuttin' or axedwarfin'.  (Wonderful, legendary dwarves of mine.)
Kikrost and Kadol: associated with art, either by making it (figurines, engravings) or being depicted in it (why hello there mayor-who-threw-Degėl-in-prison, enjoy being history).
Any really long name (without extension due to kills) or really short name (a single word): royalty or deity.  (Just kept happening.)

How about you?

Uh, I've always thought of Urist as of Male (because most of my epic urists were males, and almost all people with Urist name in the internetz is a male, since the majority of DF community are male.

The only dwarven names I know are Urist and Morul. I dont really associate Urist with any gender.

For those who dont know, Morul was an attempt at a dwarf with all skills legendary.

I always think of "Cerol" as a female name, because of the time me and my friend made seven or eight adventurers who died trying to kill the Dwarven Queen, whose name was Cerol.  Also, it's spelled like "Carol".
I usually associate the names "Meng" and "Cog" with expedition leaders, mainly just because I really like the names.

I always associate Catten with my female dwarf hunter in my first successful fort in 40d who personally had over 200 kills before the other dwarves had a third of that, (I nicknamed her "Wolfbane") had nightmares about wolves and slowly died in her bed after having her throat ripped out.

(In hindsight, I bet she was having premonition-nightmares about being killed by that blasted wolf!)

Bwa ha ha.  Yes, to get something stuck in one's memory, it doesn't matter if you're trying to help said dwarf or kill said dwarf.  In this game, the two are hard to distinguish anyway.

On that front: I find it distracting how "Ber" is a word in both goblin (kill!) and dwarf (maybe not kill!) languages.  I see spatters of "Ber" blood and get concerned I need to check my dwarves for injuries, only to have it turn out to have been a goblin.

I always associate Catten with my female dwarf hunter in my first successful fort in 40d

I think I saw another user referring to "Catten" as a female name.  Maybe it's "Catherine"-like?

Urists usually have a lot of dabbling and novice traits, having something in either every craft, metalworking or farming trades.  Kadols usually are noble-like, Asts much more so.  Asts usually become my leaders or such.  Mengs are usually fearless warriors.

There seem to be points of agreement.  As mentioned, I keep feeling like the short names (monosyllabic, at times) rise to the top of the heap.  When Ast showed up over here, I understood the situation immediately.

I think "Catten" is a royal female name. I've had several queen Catten, and one king.

Also, "Ushrir" was the name of three of my ten miners in my current fort. Appropriate, given the meaning (Quake).

Remember, guys, the names are actually words in dwarf. Open up language_DWARF.txt and search for them. Urist is "Dagger".

Amusing, we have the same Asts and Mengs.

Ah, and I've noticed a pattern too.  My "Risen"s are always female, and they're usually mechanics.  I favor that name and I favor mechanics, so that may just be my own intervention though.

Yeah, but that file gives me trouble sometimes.  Does anyone know how the accented characters (like in Degėl, Äs, and so on) are represented in the text file?  They all are replaced with other symbols (I presume for ease of use in the code), and then I can't find half of what I'm trying to look up.  I have an easier time, say, starting a new game and using the "choose a name" feature.

Kogan summons a picture of a devious Dwarven Mechanic and Engineer. Urist summons a small frown.
