I worked around it by adding an keybinding for alt-enter instead of shift-enter.

Shift+enter is one of combinations that can't be sent over telnet/vt102. There are others, e.g. shift+arrow keys don't work.

I think there is, but I don't know it.

You could try increasing the size of your putty window though.

CTRL+X to hide it. You can also press CTRL+R and CTRL+F on game window to make it take all available space.
