Apparently there is a sharp difference between saying "massage" in Japan, and saying "massagi."

One is interpreted as the internationally recognized term for a muscle rub down you pay for.

The one will get you slapped and/or get the police called.

This is useful information to have, especially if people assume you're just another English speaker who "likee to talkee Japanesee."

Also don't get frisky with any vending machines. You just never know.

Anyway, traveling abroad is extremely cool! A note of caution though; my friend used to be majoring in Japanese language, until he lived in Japan for a few years. Apparently the culture was far more bizarre than his weeaboo dreams had lead him to suspect, and the way the culture at large, and many individuals, still treat women sat poorly with him. Now he's in computer science.

But regardless, this is a really cool opportunity to see the world firsthand. Make some friends, take lots of pictures, and try to experience as much of the country and culture as possible... and before that, be sure to help your folks put the money together. It'd really suck to let this opportunity slip by!

Your opportunity sounds exciting.  That is a part of the world I have never visited and would like to see it at some point in time.  Obviously your studies are most important, but being able to tour the countryside with citizens of Japan will be a tremendous bonus.  You will get to see things the regular tourists will miss.

International travel is always a good thing to experience, especially at a young age. I credit going to Australia at 16 with transforming the way I saw the world as well as myself. It's amazing how much self-confidence you can get from doing a little solo travel on another continent.

Ok, here is a piece of advice from my friend when he went to japan. Do Not spurn it, because it will actually help you.

Whenever you're being nice or polite, tell everyone you're Australian.
Whenever you're being a dickhead, tell everyone you're an American.


It's more just re-inforcing a steriotype, but if you want to get on people's good sides, tell them you're Aussie.

And I used to wear my Montreal t-shirt while I was in transit. Despite the fact that I've never been to Montreal. Or Canada for that matter.
