It was a giant tick, so very likely no skull, but presumably an exoskeleton of some sort.

Yes.  Unfortunately, you're far more likely to be at the receiving end of a death-punch since weapons are still far superior.  If you try to eliminate an elven village, though, the sheer number of peasants throwing punches at you means that eventually one will get a lucky skull-shattering hit in.
