Best Boardgames
« on: September 07, 2010, 05:06:33 pm »

My friends and I do a lot of board gaming in addition to the various computer/console options.

Here's my list of current favorites, although there are a lot of good ones that get broken out occasionally:
Settlers of Catan & expansions
Starfarers of Catan
Warrior Knights
Dungeon Lords
Talisman
Arkham Horror
Descent
Castle Panic
Dominions

What are your favorites?

Ghostbuster's board game.
Fireball Island (I'd give my left testicle for a complete set of that.)
Hero Quest
Dungeon
Snits

There's more I'm forgetting. Really though, Arkham Horror has kind of set the standard for what I expect out of an adult board game.

Damn Nenjin. Fireball island. Where do you come up with this stuff? I had that game when I was like 7. While I don't remember it as being an amazing game, it made me chuckle that anyone knew what it was.

I recently played the game Pandemic, which was a ton of fun. It is a co-op game.

Also, while it isn't a board game, Munchkin is a ton of fun and always good for a laugh.

I have a deep well of nostalgia that I drink from regularly.

Yes, Fireball Island. A game for 7 year olds that teaches you the quickest path to victory is through your best friends. I loved that game! Every turn you had a choice: try to move closer to the win, or **** someone over. Getting to be the one to shoot the fireball out of the Idol was awesome. Stealing the ruby from another player and replacing it with a fraud: awesome. Cock-blocking them 3 spaces from the docks? AWESOME.

It also had the most beautifully pressed 3-d game board. That's what got me as a kid. The game board was literally a 3d island with ravines and river valleys for the fireballs to travel down.

It's funny. It's those games for little kids, the ones that are really competitive, where my friends and I can play it without getting heated. Not so much with other competitive board games. But when the core of a game is a giant fireball spitting idol, people come in expecting to get reemed.

Hehe. I can see that.

Although the game of Warrior Knights we played this Saturday was rather cordial. Not a whole lot of fighting or backstabbing, really. In fact, only two of the players even really had much of a feud going on and it was all good natured. We even bent some of the rules for them so they could have a giant battle as the game was ending, since neither of them was going to be able to win.

Well, we always have some problem gamers. People that don't like being picked on. Really, really terrible deals in card games that last half the game, while everyone else is kicking ass. Most everyone has gotten over the rules lawyering. Games that require you to screw over other players though, and don't dilute it with silliness like Munchkin, can tend to piss some people off though.

Fireball Island (I'd give my left testicle for a complete set of that.)

Best game on the list so far. Almost the most expensive, too.

I enjoy playing from this incomplete list:
Silverton
A good half of the CheapAss games
Race for the Galaxy
Blokus 3D
Survive!
Acquire
Can't Stop
Erosion
Tales of the Arabian Nights
Fjords
Meuterer
For Sale
Gheos

Zombies!!! is really pretty fun, but I have only played 2 player mode. http://www.twilightcreationsinc.com/zombies/
Its a fairly short survival horror game with tiles and dinky plastic models, but this also has cards and you can get screwed with them. Good times.

I'd say a full set of Talisman is both worth more in $$, and has a lot more replayability. A full set of Arkham Horror takes the cake for price too (I think the base game is $60?) Fireball Island is the win just for looking so damn cool though. Used to love the art on the cards.

Not really a board game, but THE game a screwing over your friend is called 1000 Blank White Cards. A huge crack up to play, even more fun to replay.

I started on Carccassone and Setlers, now my favourite is Small World. I love Hive, Arkham Horror, Warhammer: Invasion, Abalone and several others. I am thinking about buying some sets of Icehouse and making a copy of Space Hulk (why is it so hard to buy?!?)
