Untill half your vassals convert to Cathar and you have the whole Holy Roman Empire breathing down your neck.

Personally I find it easier to just go Free Investiture and make your main character a saint or a crusader. It gives pretty much the same bonus if you have a large enough realm without any of the downsides of an anti-pope. I do like the _idea_ of an anti-pope though, and I would like there to be an option to usurp the current pope.

Apparently the pope is king-level so in theory an empire could vassalise the papal state. I might try that when the expansion rolls around and there's a few more empires to toy around with. Maybe even an Islamic pope?!?

Islamic popes are basically the most common thing in CKii.

To clarify: If a Muslim finds himself in Rome, he WILL be elected pope. Always. Or so it seems at least. After that, he will convert the rest of the court and the province and the papacy will forever be Muslim.

I've never seen it. In all the maps I've played the Muslims get smashed out of Europe extremely quickly. :S
Does a Muslim leading the papal state do anything interesting?

Last time I made an anti-pope he had a claim on the papacy, so you can press that to usurp the current one. He does keep whatever lands he had in your territory, however.

Ok, serious newbie here. Feeling out of my depth with this, even after the tutorial.

I made a custom monarch, no kids, as King of England, 1076.

My first idea is, man, get rid of some of these titles, right?

My starting council all likes me, but only one of those is a count. The rest are mayors and a bishop. I give the one member of the nobility that's on my side the Title of Count of his own County.

So I figure, hey, give my whole council landed titles and it's a win-win. Except it's not, because giving burghers and priests landed titles makes them unhappy as well.

I look to my other counts and see that I'm universally disliked. No shock, new King, too big a demense. Almost any count I give a landed title to becomes a contender for the throne, making them more likely to revolt. I suppose this is because if don't have an heir as of yet.

So I'm little confused on the way to secure "good" nobles. Obviously, you want landed titles to stay within your bloodline, and I have to wait ? ? ? time for that to happen, since I have no heirs yet.  I feel like giving any titles to the landed nobility already in place just creates more enemies than it does friends.

Can I build new castles and award the baronies to my council members, making them dukes (therefore noble), then give them the landed titles for counties, making them Counts, so I don't get "wrong type of government?" Should I just offload landed titles like duchies to these guys, making them doges? Why is a doge still an inappropriate station to have control of a county? If I make a burgher a doge, then he says he wants control of a county, why am I still getting "wrong government." He wants the bloody county!!!!

Does giving my burghers duchies make all the nobility within that duchy their vassals? Does that mean when I levy troops from my Doge that they'd levy more troops from their vassals because they (the Doge) like me?

De Jure claims? How do you call them out? Does it require your chancellor going on a mission to fabricate a claim?

And why, for example, if I award the County of Middlesex (where Court is) to say, my Spymaster, does Court move to a completely different county in the kingdom?

What does it take to strip titles off imprisoned nobles? The tooltip says they're traitors so it should be fine, and yet objects. Crown authority is set to medium. I end up with a lot of imprisoned nobles still holding titles to counties.

Why does the penalty for levies out in the field for too long seem to peak and then go away?

Am I still getting some sort of taxation from all the counties in the country if the tax on nobility is set to "none"? Or am I essentially giving away taxation (which I'm probably not getting anyways since i"m exceeding my demense) when I grant landed titles out to people?

I see my Bishops have a negative opinion of the papacy, yet the amount they pay out is also in the negatives. What gives with that?

I honestly don't think I've felt this overwhelmed by a game since DF. I'm tempted to restart at a lower station in life so I don't have control over as much.

Start off with a duchy in Ireland. Make sure your duke is Irish if you customize him, that way the Irish counts and barons and such won't hate you.

Learn the game that way. :D

So, I started as Touscana, pretty standard stuff (I think you can play Matilda in the demo even), formed the Kingdom of Italy, managed to break away from the HRE during a massive civil war and I've even got a member of my dynasty as the heir to Sicily, so I thought I was doing pretty well, until I chanced to look east.

Holy crap. In my games the Ilkhanate almost always expands south, taking over most of the Muslim south-eastern portion of the map. Usually they stop expanding somewhat after they get the Seljuk territories, and are halted on the doorstep of the Byzantine Empire. It's really odd to see the Ilkhanate owning Russia and the Cuman territories, with the Golden Horde being constrained so far north.

Wow that's the best job I have ever seen the Golden Horde do.

Anyways, playing a county of Shrewsbury game, took several tries to get a favorable English-Invasion that didn't end with the scripted ending of my game. Luckily that bastard William died and Norway won so I could keep going.  Managed to get several counties and nab the Duchy of Oxford during a civil war. (England is now Independant after having been conquered by Norway...twice now I think, it always ends up independant, this time thanks to Norway having Elective law)

So anyways a bit ago my king says "LULZ GIVE YOUR CAPITAL"  So in a very lucky assassination roll I managed to stab him.  Unfortunately I was found out but I don't give a fuck, you don't fucking take my capital.

I've conquered Rome, Spoleto, and one other county I don't remember the name of. Right now the papacy is just one extremely tiny county I pushed into the side. Then I declared war on it and installed my antipope there, earning me monies. Of course now that my current king has died the antipope is no different than a normal pope now :/.

Also the HRE is split apart and is smaller than Poland, which is my Kingdom. Because it converted into the Cathar religion, which gives every Catholic nation free reign to take their lands, which I did, by taking the Kingdom of Bohemia. So I currently control Bohemia, Spoleto, and Poland. I'm a member of Italy, apparently, and can vote in it.

So is there any way to unite these kingdoms under one title, the Emperor?

Not in vanilla, unless you take the Holy Roman Empire as yours. I think there's a few mods that have De Jure Empires everywhere, and at least one with custom Empires (Such as making an Empire of Poland)

New form-able empires will also be added by the newest patch.

Though I'm personally more looking forward to more fleshed out Muslims.

So I'm really disappointed. Wanted to have a quick game of Crusader Kings II where I lead William Wallace to victory against the English in the Scottish War of Indepence. Apparently it's not in the game at all. Scotland and England are even at peace at the time period.  :'(

Seriously, how do you over look something so serious in both English and Scottish history?

I was playing as Alania where instead of warring with Derbent and Georgia, I swore fealty to Georgia. A lunatic was eventually made king, I plotted for the throne, got it, then lost it and got it again. Then I swore fealty to the Empire after they beat down the Seljuks. Byzantine politics happened, with much of Greece and Anatolia in rebellion and Italy back in the hands of the Emperor. Oh, and the Mongols came.
