some other solution == hand made maps :P
Add some noise to the map. So even if you know a certain location, the path will not be the same.

yup... is just as difficult as I remember... :D

There's a few items that suffer from off wording when purchasing supplies, but other than that I haven't run into any issues.

EDIT:
Hmm... now there's a case of disappearing colonists and wood...

i sailed out twice, the second time with over 200 days food and never found land. HARD. I will have to try again, and again.

I would like to see soem interesting things happen on a voyage. How about a mutiny spurred by dwindling food supplies instead of them just waiting to die.

Just a couple of ideas, that I'm sure you've had before -

Selling - I bought 250 colonists and ended up with $300 of food (~3 days). Would have loved to have sold back 150!

Storms - Different magnitudes (if that's the right word) of storm - the higher the magnitude, the higher the damage dealt to ships that turn. Can make carpenters + wood more important on huge voyages.

What does 'expedition-based combat' actually mean?

Last I checked, people on expeditions don't fight in a special way.
Seriously, my thoughts exactly. It's not that it's THAT hard to find out myself, it's just a bit dissapointing to read a description of something without being any wiser afterwards.

Soooo... is there ANYBODY who cba to assplain a bit how this game works/feels?

Oh, I thought i'd post this here, further info about the new version:

Following is a resumed list of changes in this new version:

    * Graphics version, using an augmented 8×8 tileset made by Oryx
    * Sailing has been completely rehashed, now you control your ships by rotating them, and the wind direction determines your speed.
    * Combat system has been redone, now squads of units tackle each other during a Ranged, Mounted and Melee round. Units can be wounded or killed, depending on their resistance, weapons and armor.
    * Storms now arise, grow and die in the middle of the ocean, destroying careless fleets.
    * Native settlements now abound in the new world, with several different cultures, and they will respawn enemy expeditions when they are hostile. They can also be ransacked after the local population has been slaughtered.
    * Weather, Wind direction, temperature and doldrums are simulated
    * You can Chop forests for wood now
    * Forests and mountains now block LOS, making exploration more interesting
    * New tunes selection, including a remix by roguebard Jice

What is missing and will be implemented before the public v0.1.8

    * In-game guides
    * Documentation

Also, I think I haven't linked the console version vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEGCwp4ffRY&feature=player_embedded

there is no release of the new version up, it's in private testing. Ask slashie and he might let you beta, or you can wait.

this time, I set out with 130 colonists and enough food to get there with no military to eat it up. I used my wood to repair the ships on the way so when i found land (out past 1300nl!) i had to chop some trees to build the town.

I transferred 130 colonists and the rest of my spare wood into the town. Then, no town. My colonists just vanished and no town was created. POOF.

Meaning that battles are not individual vs individual but between groups of units

For now you can only civilize America, based on a very detailed map. In the future I plan adding a full world map (right now it's only the atlantic + america + partial europe and africa) and randomly generated worlds.
