Has anyone played Recettear?
« on: July 23, 2010, 04:34:06 pm »

Well has anyone?
Recettear is a story about a girl (Named Recet) running an Item shop because her dad (Name Unknown) took out a massive loan from a lone-shark fairy (Named Tear). The interesting part of the game is that you are a shopkeeper, usally an NPC.

The story is that when Recet was younger her dad took out a loan to become an adventurer. Some time later Recet has a visitor named Tear who has come to collect the debt made by Recet's dad. As Recet doesn't have the money (Tear even says that if she knew how much there was, she would faint.) In order to keep her house Recet makes her home become an item shop.

The gameplay is different at times. In order to make your money you buy weapons, armor, food and other goods to sell to get the money to pay off your debt. However you can make money by going to the adventures guild and hiring one to take you though a dungeon collecting items. I can't really say more other than its got good art, obscure memes and fun gameplay.

I saw a link to it recently.

It looked interesting, but a couple typos in the text in their own screenshots made me kind of leery of the quality.

I dunno what I think about the whole economy / dungeoneering / dating sim thing.  (Even if you're not technically dating anyone--for all I know you might be, though--it talks about social encounters being necessary to get a lot of specific ending stuff)  It could be pretty neat.  But I'm always unsure of game that have a time limit and that make you choose what you're doing on any given day.  It can be done right (Harvest Moon) or it can be done very wrong (Kudos).

I guess in the end it's essentially the same genre as Princess Maker 2, except there's an item store instead of "go work at this job", and combat is Diablo instead of Dragon Warrior.  This could be a good thing.

I'll have to try the demo.

A lot of the typos are things that'll be fixed for the final release. It's the first game from this company so I'm personally willing to cut them a lot of slack - it's two guys bringing over an indie japanese game and it's damn fun. They already earned my $20 when it's done.

And no, there's no dating sim or dating-sim-esque aspects that I noticed.

I've not played the demo yet... I watched a few of the "let's play" videos on YouTube, and I'm interested.  No time right now though.

I'm still cringing at the game name... horrible, horrible pun.

Capitalism. ho!

Edit: Hasn't this game been out for a while now? I have a faint memory of someone saying something about this like 2 years ago.

I've played the demo and loved it to bits.  I was so very disappointed when I discovered the fully translated version isn't out yet. :(

Try to finish the second dungeon. And yes, I so sad at how short the demo was, still I can replay it. Until next time Capitalism! I Curse Thee!

I just found this last night and it's great. I thought the translation does a really good job of keeping the feel (or what I assume is the feel) of the original.

I'm kinda stuck on the dungeons though... Is there anyway to leave without finishing it? I just wanna go down a few levels and grab stuff, not do the whole thing.

Interesting... I'll have to keep an eye on this.

Yah, it's about 3 years old but was never released in English. The goons in charge of Carpe Fulgur are localizing it in cooperation with the original company.

There's an escape item, but I don't recall the name

This is much more fun than I thought it'd be. Definitely eyeing buying it at the beginning of August.

Wow... I'm going to have to echo that that's a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I like the style of humor too. Gotta make sure I remember it's around once the full game's out.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.
