suing my doctor for malpractice
« on: July 23, 2010, 10:19:20 am »

I've had a dwarf lying in the hospital for like four years now after being attacked by a goblin.  Her lower leg is slashed open, and has been for all four years.  I've got thread, cloth, soap and all the other stuff.  My doctor even got a dwarf out of the hospital who lost his right hand fer crying out loud.  HE arrived and left during the time she's been lying there.  She's got a cut leg.  Even more, she's described as "incredibly tough and very fast to heal."  I have at least four dwarves with high-ranked medical skills such as "Expert Diagnostician" and "Professional Suturer" yet she's been lying in the hospital for four years, waiting for a doctor to come stitch up her leg.  You'd think after four years it'd manage to heal itself, even if badly.  I'm really going out on a limb here, but I think there might be a few issues with the medical system still to work out.

yeah... I heard the best way to deal with this is to give the patient yet another injury so that they will be reexamined by the medical staff.

Or... you know... magma

The worst part is that she needs alcohol to make it through the day but she can't remember the last time she tasted it.  That's pure cruelty.

1. Define shiny new "Hospital" burrow.
2. Assign doctors.
3. Watch doctors move to shiny new Hospital burrow.
4. Pull lever.
5. Appoint new doctors.

Make it a drowning chamber.  That way you can recover the goods.

Or a spike drop, you drop them down 3 or 4 floors onto spikes and if they don't die they starve or succumb to infection.or if you want a faster death 5 to 8 is the maximum I have ever got without instakilling them.

Note, that even if the Health screen says they're bleeding from a hole caused by a broken skull that also ruptured an artery, unless a diagnosis says they need surgery, they just sit in the hospital bed. Bleeding. And it seems to me she had a diagnosis, but the doctor decided she was okay. Unless she gets hurt again, she will not receive a new diagnosis.

I've always felt dwarves have so much alcohol in their blood you could use it as hand sanitizer.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

the usual problem is waiting for diagnosis. just set a large number of dwarves to be able to diagnose. that should help somewhat. also turn off the doctors other labors.

past that? hope for multiple doctors. if the labor is turned on they may help.

I believe i shall attempt to a solution to this in my next hospital. A red call button next to each bed, that sends a wooden spike through the bed and into the patient to re-summon the doctor for a second opinion...

If I were able, I'd put a pressure plate and a spike under the bed so that freeloaders who wander into the hospital only looking for a free bed would find themselves with a reason to be in the hospital...
