Well, game was 'playable' as early as 31.04 or even earlier.
Sure there are some military issues, but its easy to work around them: never assign 'training' weapons, be explicit about equipment, and use 'individual combat drills' for training.
Regarding contaminations, you can use dfhack to clean them up.

m, e, go to the item you want to be adamantine, press M then scroll to Adamantine.  Then press enter.
many seasons later in my fortress and my guy still doesnt walk 5 feet to grab the weapons and armor even after trying this

There are currently no absolute show-stoppers. DF is very playable and most of the features work fine for their current level of completion.

True, but I'd argue that DF is not a game for people who want OOTB perfection.

Playable is defined as 'able to be played'.
DF is able to be played, albeit with hacks, though that isn't really true because unstoppable contamination isn't game breaking in the first place so DF is playable anyways. Of course that's not true either because contamination is stoppable without hacks, just install floodgate locks and close them off immediately when the contamination occurs and flood the infected area and drain the water off map before the poison starts teleporting around.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...
