The rebel system is incredibly broken and poorly conceived considering the way the economy works.  What happens is this: thanks to industrialization, there's a huge disparity in wealth between different POPS.  POPs working for and owning high profitable factories will have loads of cash while those working in factories just getting by on subsidies will have no cash or nearly no cash.  The result is some POPs buy luxuries while some POPs starve and build up militancy.  Militant pops will find a rebel cause to support no matter how you placate them.  Grant political reforms and your jacobins will just become reactionaries and communists.  Grant social reforms and your communists will just become fascists and anarcho-liberals.  All they care about is the fact that they are starving.  And there will be starving POPs as long as you have industry because of the disparities in the economy.  Hence the world is drowned in revolts by starving craftsmen (who have huge life needs) and capitalists (who despite the name are often the poorest guys in the world).

I install VRRP, which divides their needs by 100, I think.

I dont understand how rebellions work or uprisings whatever, i have low taxes on all my people, i make huge money from my factories.

Actually there are many ways in which the rebel system fails. 1.2 didn't improve the situation, worsening it instead - it didn't do anything with nationwide anarcho-liberal rebellions crippling the Great Powers. Instead it mostly got rid of minor ones, including the Springtime of Nations. Nationalist revolts rarely happen and even the freshly conquered colonials often join A-Ls. And some nations (Poland and Hungary) can't ever spawn nationalist rebels.

Seriously, don't even try to understand this system. If you really want to play this game, just accept this and learn to deal with rebels - it's extremely easy.

I just got a fuckload of Jacobin rebels as well. Pretty much all of Old France and some of my colonies are now controlled. I've no idea if this was caused by my assimilation of the Spaniards or what.

Political reform desire combined with high literacy, concioussness and militancy. If you already have universal suffrage or weighted voting, then you may probably want to fix the bug in the rebels.txt file. The game checks if the player has both those settings instead of one of them, which means Jacobins can appear even in perfect democracies. Unfortunately, it only means that a fuckload of anarcho-liberals will spawn instead of them.

Grant political reforms and your jacobins will just become reactionaries and communists.  Grant social reforms and your communists will just become fascists and anarcho-liberals.  All they care about is the fact that they are starving.  And there will be starving POPs as long as you have industry because of the disparities in the economy.  Hence the world is drowned in revolts by starving craftsmen.

Not exactly. First of all, I fail to see why the most profitable factories would pay their workers more - usually they stayed profitable by giving them as little money as possible for as much work, as possible. In Victoria II, as long as raw materials are not lacking, most craftsmen are the richest people in the entire country (opposing to their poor, starving bosses). The main problem is that in the late game economy implodes from many reasons. Some raw materials become scarce (timber!), as opposing to dirt-cheap industrial goods. Prices are not changing quick enough to fix this problem and they couldn't do this if they were, because the most prestigious countries buy the goods first. If the lowliest beggar in the Great Britain can affort his bread, he will buy it before the rich banker in Montenegro.

Several other factors add up to make the POPs militancy rise steadily. It's a slow process, but soon most pops hit the level when they start sympathising with the rebels, and then organising the revolt. It wouldn't be so bad if they did spread amongst many rebel types, but nationalists form somewhat rarely. If they support social reforms than the political ones more, they will join communists. If communism isn't discovered yet (it usually isn't before 1900), they will join anarcho-liberals instead. And, because of 1.2 changes, they usually will not rise until they can fill most of your country.

these rebels are ridiculous.

this wouldnt be so ridiculous if after i killed all the rebels their numbers would go down by the amount i killed in battles, but instead it just keep rising.

My last Jacobin rebellion was like 400 jacobins across my entire nation :/

paradox as usual fails to fix these things.

What baffles me is that the problem is essentially fixable by tweaks in the raw files, yet there have been 2 patches and a beta stage and the problem remains.

Rise thread!
I've been having a bit of a bug that's pissing me off. Loading a game causes it to crash. So every game must be finished in one sitting. Any way to fix that?

Never seen it myself but if I recall correctly Victoria 2 was the first of paradoxes games that saves to "documents" rather than the game install directory. Not sure if that can screw things up but it might be worth checking that the saves are actually there and okay.

I've got a save in something around 1900 that's 43 mb but the mod (PDM/APD) probably help making it a lot larger than the regular save files.

Just making some NECROmorph soup.

Anyways, i'm totally baffled on how to go about getting the politcal party I want in to office. I have been screwed over twice now in the late mid-game by getting stuck with either a ridiculously loyal and contrnt pop that keeps a conservative-intervensionist party in power or with a liberal pop that only wants to be reactionary. Both times I was trying to achieve socialist/communist parties/governments.

Other times I incurred rebellion too soon and suffered an extreme reactionary uprising that I had no chance of putting down. I once also accidently caused a beneficial jacobin uprising, bug i'm not really sure what I did to do so.

While I dont mind playing with conservative parties or absolute monarchies, laissez faire snd interventionism fuck me over a lot midgame just when im about to pick up steam.

EDIT: Using POP Demands mod.

Yeah, the political parties system is why I don't like Victoria 2 compared to say, EU or Crusader Kings.  Playing as a large country, it's hard to steer the government one way or another.

Ever play as China?  It seems like all of their political parties favor either State Capitalism or Planned.  That's fine early on, but upgrading and building factories for a country as big as China BY HAND is far too great of a hassle.

It seems like in Victoria 2 you fall into one of two camps:

1) Small enough to steer the government the way you want, but not large enough wage war or do anything important with diplomacy, or

2) A great power that ends up being conservative/liberal at most with few interesting domestic political options.

Indeed, the last time I played as China I was going for a quick reform and let a lot of militancy build up in the hopes of a heavenly kingdom uprising, but ended up with that massive reactionary rebellion.

Generally, I like playing the medium-sized nations such as Sweden, Japan, and the South American nations. This last time, and what prompted me to post was me Swedish play through. I was going for full industrial victory and was micromanaging my economy as such, managed to get to Great Power status and even 5th place on the chart, but got effed over when I formed Scandinavia which changed my political parties and gave me previously mentioned interventionist government. So now, capitalists do a good job of expanding my industrial capacity, but it's causing me to import a lot of goods where as before I was only importing a little fruit. So now i'm stuck with a biggish-sized nation with almost no ground forces, no navy whatsoever (though that was a consequence of my play style), and little control over my economy. I'd like to actually switch to a socialist government, but I spent decades of raising conservative loyalty which leaves me in a poor position altogether. I would cause a rebellion, but I think by the time I raised enough militancy I would be bankrupt, out of even secondary power place, and with a lot of restructuring to do.

EDIT: Actually, in my first play through that I posted in the Ownage thread, I ended up as a highly liberal Japan that played quite interestingly if probably inefficient.

Woah necroed.  For the steam sale I have no doubt.

My current game is with Spain.  Its looking pretty inevitable that I'm going to lose great power status.  Spain seems pretty good from the choose your nation screen but what they don't tell you is that your population is super agrarian.  You get left behind going into the industrial age.

Granted I'll probably be able to take back GP status, but... it would be a bit demoralizing to lose my sphere'd nations.  I love building my sphere in this game even though I'm a little vague on what it does.
