Generation of Caves

How?

To expand, how are the caves generated? How do veins work, and, more importantly, how do those nice open spaces get defined?
Can I have a term to search for, to better understand the subject?

Toady is a former math teacher. The DF client connects directly to the fractal void within his mind, which readily spits out randomly-generated shapes and forms.

And, even though, as everyone knows it, having a part of your brain dedicated to generating fractal content is a requirement to be math teacher, there are quite a few documents on the internet talking about the subject.

Every planet Toady generates is a small part of the full universe. In future releases, Dwarves will be able to live on Suns, ice planets, comets, and the like. It will be like Spore.... except so much better.

No. Your intellect will never overcome the power of Toadys intellect which is currently controlling your world generator. Do not attempt it. Serious side effects may occur, like vegetableization.

Reminds me that a friend of mine found a "spore rogue-like" out there.  Shame I can't find it.  I'll bug him about it though.
