Every planet Toady generates is a small part of the full universe. In future releases, Dwarves will be able to live on Suns, ice planets, comets, and the like. It will be like Spore.... except so much better.

Reminds me that a friend of mine found a "spore rogue-like" out there.  Shame I can't find it.  I'll bug him about it though.
A spore rougelike? wow.

Ok, darn.  He says he recalls that it was called sporeRL, but I can't find it via Google under that name.

And, even though, as everyone knows it, having a part of your brain dedicated to generating fractal content is a requirement to be math teacher, there are quite a few documents on the internet talking about the subject.

So, while we await an intervention of Footkerchief, I humbly link you to this

That was a really interesting read and I believe it's of value to the OP.

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.
Clearly you've never been drunk.

No problem  ;)
I doubt the algorithm described in this article is used by Toady, but it gives good results.

prospector maybe ?

No, it was supposed to encompass all of the things Spore was expected to be in 2005.  Only in ASCII.

Huh, I had actually discovered this by accident when attempting to make a Game of Life simulation myself and having options to change the rules, sometimes they came up with interesting patterns if I set the rules right.  Neat that someone else saw that too and is using it.

Yeah, I think I've posted in that thread.

If you can't find it, no big deal.  I wouldn't be surprised if he was making things up (not intentionally though).
