What did you download that would be infected with ransomware in the first place?

No idea.

So some files are encrypted and others are not? That's interesting. I wonder how it chooses.

Its recognition software is silly. DOSbox still works, Nethack and Slash'EM still work. DF and Cataclysm are borked, Skype is gutted and all my word and text files are screwed over. A more comprehensive analysis is currently underway.

Yeah. You should run malwarebytes.

Doing that right now. Pretty sure the files are still screwed, but at least it won't do it again.

I'm looking for decrypters. If it's based on the same variant [ransomware usually is nowadays] there should be a way to decrypt this. It's been hacked and rehacked to hell and back by av/anti malware folks, so I don't think you're totally screwed. If this were last year I'd say you were.

You've got alot of work to do to fix it. Unless you have a system backup from when the file was there and not infected yet, that would be the *easiest* way to reverse it as long as you get malwarebytes installed asap to prevent reinfection.. I'm not sure if the new variants still work after a non-specialized rollback. Could be a shot in the dark. Also I can't find working decrypters for the current variants, so directly recovering your words file isn't an option. You're right now trying to prevent the entirety of your system from being locked up.

Double post, but if you were using MS word, I believe there's an 'autosave' feature somewhere in the current [past four years..] versions. So there's probably a copy of whatever file you were working on somewhere in your temp if you used that feature/word processor. I believe. Would just be under your 'recently saved/opened' or whatever that little tab in the ribbon is, with an odd temp title like ~1093736527.pdf/etc.

Got RID of the virus. Malwarebytes is cool that way, when it isn't molesting my Adware Cleaner. Recovering the files is going to be trickier. Going to try to revert them in Safe Mode or something like that.

@Mictlantecuhtli[That is one cruel username you have there]

Going to try that. Hopefully I can retrieve my English essay before its due date[Today].

@Everyone

Thanks! You've helped a lot.

For the last few nights there's been a pair of dumbasses driving up and down the road about dusk, shooting at deer from their truck, and driving up my neighbors driveway to fire from beside their house when nobody was around. Haven't hit any of the deer so far, either. Very dangerous, and illegal, practice all around. And its pissing me off even more because I can't get a good photograph of their license plate or faces.

So, I randomly decided to make an RPG system that constantly makes fun of itself and has a sizable number of semi-obscure references in it.

Of course, I couldn't bring myself to write a farcical setting. I started writing a full-fledged serious backstory without thinking.

Goddammit, it's probably the ultra-serious Silmarillion I just finished reading that's behind this. I'll need to re-read HGTTG and re-watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail to get back into the mood of writing insane stuff. >:(

You could make fun of the fact that it has such a serious setting :v

Frankly, it helps if the world is Grimdark but the Protagonist(s) are batshit bonkers and hilarious. Fucking amazing comedy if done right.
