So...after three CEOs in a row have fucked up HP five ways from Sunday, they're hurting in terms of sales and market share. How do they fix this?

By laying off 30,000 workers, of course. Because y'know....WE'RE the ones who are really to blame. Not the $150+ million golden parachute package to a guy who embezzled company funds to pay hush money to a former softcore porn actress who he hired and groped. Not the golden parachute to a CEO who wasn't even on the job a full year and did nothing but tank the stock by making OMGWTFBBQ-type moves. Not the current CEO who hasn't done anything other than seem less crazy by comparison and who now has made the "bold" decision to fire off a bunch of people who aren't Chinese.

FUCK YOU HP, AND FUCK YOU CAPITALISM.  >:(  >:(

This is why I wouldn't shit in an HP even if someone cut a hole in the top of one for me to do so. Because that would mean someone would have actually had to pay for the unit to be manufactured in the first place.

My desire for HP to get wiped out ranks right up there with major diseases like AIDS. Because humanity will be so much better off without it.

On the other hand, the money they are "saving" from this is supposed to be dumped into R&D (and sales, but ignoring that for the moment), and since one of HPs biggest problems the last few years has been gutting their R&D department, maybe angling for being a smaller R&D focused company will be good for them. Despite the gutting, there R&D STILL manages to pump out some really good tech now and again.

I'm probably being unduly optimistic, though. A big cut like this is what precipitated their last plummet, and the new CEO kind of has a history of riding companies into the ground, doesn't she?

I'll believe it when I see it. Until then, "R&D" is just shorthand for "Meg Whitman needs another bonus". HP has a long history of our CEO's taking exorbitant compensation, regardless of corporate performance. Whitman is taking a $1 annual salary, but her total compensation package was about $16.5 million last year. When Iacocca did it, it was a gimmick. Now it's just smug bullshit. "Oh look, I'm such a good person I'm working for peanuts*!"

*Disclaimer: Peanuts may be served in complementary solid gold serving bowls and include private houses in the Caribbean where the peanuts will be served by a permanent staff.

Hey, I'm not saying I /believe/ it, exactly, just that it's a possibility.

But uh. What the hell is wrong with the HP board that they keep hiring these people. I can't help but imagine they'd be better off hiring the janitor that cleans up after their board meetings.

A big part of the problem with corporate boards in general is that it's just a modern day country-club for the uberwealthy. Most of these people are CEOs of other companies and sit on boards of multiple corporations often with incestuous relationships, such as Marc Andreesen sitting on the board at HP and eBay, and Whitman having been CEO at eBay; or Patricia Russo, who until recently was the CEO of Lucent (before she ran it into the ground), and sits on the board of HP, GM, Alcoa and Merck. When you're on the Board of Directors of four goddamned gigantic corporations *and* a CEO in your own right, how much time do you think she actually spends paying attention to any one of them?

They mostly exist to rubberstamp decisions made by one or two people, and collect their $100,000 a year.
If somebody wants to make a real reform of Wall Street, ban people from being on the Board of Directors of more than one corporation at a time (or more than a certain market capitalization, so if you want to be on several small companies that's fine...several megacorps? NO.) I'd potentially say "ban people from being a CEO and director at the same time" as well, but I could maybe see allowing 1-and-1. I think a lot of the corporate accountability problems stem in part from too few people paying too little attention to too many companies. If all you have on your plate is one company, then by god you better be paying attention to it.

If there was an option to hide all comments from Youtube, I would so use it. It is a cesspool of filth and corruption where all that is petty and trifle about humanity goes to die.

But hey if it works for you.

Much the same as the "Like" button, I won't thumbs people comments on Youtube, let alone read them. The fascination with Youtube culture is the reason 1,000 new Let's Plays are vomited out daily, with half of the creators hoping they can turn those thumbs into advertising dollars or attention from game companies. The same people that end up here as Escaped Lunatics saying "chek my utube."

In short, it's all shit.

I use the Like button as a secondary favorites. Interesting things are liked, but only stuff I'd bother to keep track of more easily is favorited.

Do readitlater bookmarks count, or am I the only one who remembers to actually remove things from that instead of piling it into a giant mass of bookmarks?

You leave my giant uncategorized pile of bookmarks out of this. That's beside the point.  :-\

I read comments, but usually only the top comments, those usually contain a good pun about the video.
The most annoying part of youtube is "H3Y CH3CK 0UT M41 4W3S0M3 BR0CR4FT L3TZ PL41! 33TZ Z0 4W3S0M3 4ND U 2 1F U L13K 33T!!1!!3L3V3N(LOLSOFUNNY)!!!"
I read my gmail occasionally to check for intresting replys to my posts that people say. If its 'X has sent you a message/video' i just delete it because its never intresting anyway.
The only good lets players:
davidr64yt, just a awesome narrator, and he makes very nice videos. Every single one of his videos deserve a place on my homepage.
Yogscast minecraft episodes were neat.
Gamechap, also minecraft, but its hilarious. (i dont watch many LP's except for minecraft, and if i watch different ones i watch davids vids)

There are sure a few (~10?) others out there, but that would be about it.
