Toady could probably tell since Implaler work is open source, via examining it.

Could we get samples of the fan insults? I know the answer is probably no, but I'm forced to wonder what exactly was said.

The reverse engineering is where the claim would get legs as unless they change "everything" the code will be identical to something from DF and if they change everything then they are making a complete other game already.

Regardless anything they even try to make will fail as nothing can capture the brilliance that is DF and a previous poster was right, impaler has been shooting his mouth off for awhile now (he seems to frequent some Civ forums) and in a couple of posts ive been able to find hes rather blatant about his ripping off, of this.

What exactly went down?
|
v
They made a DF clone.

I did read the thread, you know.  ;D

Sure, I totally understand why Toady wouldn't want a clone project on the Bay 12 forums. But I don't see how that necessarily precludes any kind of "understanding," or necessitates the total removal of DFHack from the public eye. I guess what I'm saying here is that, from my point of view, it looks like DFHack was collateral damage. And that means that I am also, um, collaterally damaged, along with everybody who uses and loves DFHack and utilities like Stonesense.

But what I'm really wondering about is the insulting and defamatory behavior Toady mentioned. Was that just Impaler, or was peterix involved also?

In my cursory search I found him ragging on the UI, and how the game ultimately suffers and ruined by it, and he referred to bay12'er as sycophants.

well from looking on the civ forums impaler seems to frequent he refers to anyone who donates or defends DF as sycophantic lackeys.

so hes just your basic internet punk with a god complex whos going to crash and burn, nothing to see here.

I totally ninja'ed you.

I dont think he is a punk. He seems to be respected by the Civ community as a capable and knowledgeable modder who specializes in users interface, and may have worked with Firaxas for UIs. Havent verified this information yet.

Found it. This course of action was likely justified and probably overdue.

i refer to him as a punk attitude wise. he see's something he doesnt like and thinks he can do better. Civ is a far cry from DF.

See also this.

Even if this DF clone project is totally "understandable" and legal, if they're going to act like this on the forums, they shouldn't have expected to last.

I should point out that although reverse-engineering and cloning are going on, I'm not saying that there is any specific copyright violation there or that they are occurring to directly support one another.

However, when you've got somebody that has been broadly reverse-engineering DF for months contributing to a cloning project for DF (also for months if the logs are correct), it exacerbates the larger situation and was ultimately enough for me to feel I should ban peterix.  There was also more badmouthing associated to #dfhack, and apparently they are digging through some symbols that I released on accident, which I consider unethical.  They can do it, legally, as far as I know, but if they want to gleefully capitalize on my mistakes they shouldn't expect my respect.  I'm sure they don't care about that, anyway.

Impaler's insults speak for themselves, but I don't claim them for peterix, and I have no reason to believe he insulted you guys or advocated starving me out the way Impaler did.
