Oh you guys.

I don't really know what else to say, other than to answer the original question, no.

It would be great if we could make more education mandatory. For example, IMHO I think it would be with our interests in the long run to fly teenagers to see the remnants of Concentration camps in Europe or the Killing Fields of Cambodia.

Those visits alone absolutely changed my worldview. Makes you realize what humanity, and you as a human, are capable of.

Think of how many millions we spend on persecuting single criminals, when we can't get children in our schools to pass basic literacy tests.

You should.

The thing is, the internet - for the most part, imparts knowledge should people seek it. Otherwise they just get porn. There are plenty of knowledgeable people or people who believe they are knowledgeable.

But wisdom, something we need more people to have, can only be found by living life and experiencing different things- going outside and out beyond their usual boundaries.

Aah, a die-hard capitalist, I see. You would also agree on scaling back our taxes to incredibly large degrees, right? After all, it's not necessary to pay taxes once the benefits are gone.

Incidentally, that's what taxes are. A public fund that everybody (even you!) gets to draw from when their moment of need arises. The only reason anybody is considered to have a right to this stuff is because everybody is paying in a substantial portion of their income to get it in the first place.

A large part of this depends on how much money a person makes. Richer people receive less benefits from taxes and pay more in, so they don't really like social welfare. For example: my family is richer, so I get to be a little biased against taxes. There are also some obvious reasons to dislike giving people welfare that don't seem to deserve it.

Social security and medicare are two big things that I particularly don't like because everybody gets them no matter what and it costs so damn much. If the age that people received it was pushed back and it was only given to poor elderly people then it wouldn't be so bloated.
ic
Education is a good thing for everybody though; I think the majority of people can agree with that. Makes the world less stupid and improves the economy overall. Sadly, teachers haven't improved even as we pump money into the education system. Since teachers are probably the most important factor in education, they should probably get paid a lot more. All the resources in the world won't help if we have crappy teachers.

Honestly I think the derail at least shows that Americans would rather work on other things first than give away free Internet. <- trying to tie derail and rant into topic  :P

Come on man, we are/have all been teenagers Except for a few at some point. You is lonely.

I know what I am, and that is content. Not lonely. I have never encountered a situation where I felt as if I needed additonal social interaction. As such, I am not lonely.

It's alright. Sometimes, you just need a hug.

Well, arn't you just a barrel of sunshine? Like I said, not lonely.
Regardless, this is getting to the point of a derail.

You've got some nerve saying that the entirety of students don't care what happens in their future. If it wern't for tax I'd certainly not be here writing this right now. Without tax we'd be living in some stupid old backwards country with next to no modern services, infact none at all, and Britain probably would have lost the 100 years war.

Also, this topic pretty much is a massive Nature vs. Nurture debate, and as a biologist I have to say that having internet access (for myself at least) has had a rather large (in the good direction) impact on my morals, knowledge of world and reasoning skills.

Also, metalslime, you are lonely.

You don't have to hug if you don't want to.  That's your subconscious speaking btw.

That depends on how valid you think Freud is.

Freudian Psychology is the most invalid psychological theory there is. Freud never backed up his ideas, only claiming that any deviance from his norm was the result of repressed memories. I know how I feel, as invalid a concept is in today's psychology. Not to venture into Happyologist insanity, but I am of the opinion that most psycologists are only out there to make as much money as they can, and diagnosing their patients disorders will give them a reputation. The actual existance of said disorders dosen't matter, because more patients diagnosed equals a better reputation, and thus more profit.
